Well. Life has taken a turn, and due to the economy, I have become unemployed. So let's have a contest.

Here's the deal. We have a smoking room in our home. It has taken a lot of time and has been a labor of love. And as I have come to love and respect my Cigar Pass family, I want your input on how to finish our room. The walls are finished, but the ceiling is not and that is where I need your help..

SO! Here is a couple of pictures of the room as it is today before the ceiling is finished.

And here is the unfinished ceiling 11'x8'.

I want your ideas on how to finish the ceiling. Painted, stained, paneled, assorted box tops, all one brand. Well, you get the idea. Please post your pictures, drawings or just plain ideas. Whatever works. My wife and I will pick the winning idea together. We will give this contest, a little time to get plenty of ideas. Let's say, February 14th. St. Valentine's Day.

I will put together a nice 5er for the winner. And may even through in a little extra something special. When finished, I will post pictures.
Thanks All.

Here's two that I thought were cool from which I ripped from Google.

Do you save your bands? That many box tops to cover the walls, you'd probably have a ton of bands. That would look pretty cool on the ceiling. Probably a pain in the ass to actually do, though.

And best of luck in the job search.

I would take Fuente cedar boxes and separate the lids from the bottoms and then cover every square inch of the ceiling with the open part down. This would create a nice geometric look and Fuente cedar boxes smell soooooooooo good!

And it goes with your current motif

Edited to add......For those areas between boxes that don't have coverage you can glue some unbanded yard-gars to fill the space.

Good luck!

Yes I save my bands. Elaborate a little more on how you think it should be. You know mosaic, in line, all one way orYes I save my bands. Elaborate a little more on how you think it should be. as far as how many bands I have saved.

Sorry to hear about your current economic situation. With that in mind I think Faux Tin or Copper Ceiling Tiles would look great in your smoking room. They are easy to install and can be found for decent prices.

Since you did the walls all boxes, I would continue that way with the ceiling. Keep the flow going.

Wow. I take it from your band picture, that you are a fan of JDNs.

Take all the panels down and paint them, paint the supports for the panels and to top it off adhere your cigar bands to the panels, this is an original idea which i wanted to do before the wife took over the room. You can paint the panels and supports to your liking and you have something that you'll love.

Ask for a picture from the better looking CP members(me included), then just paste them on your ceiling.

You can't go wrong with that idea!

Well if you go with Freeberns idea I guess you'll need a picture of me as well...damn it....fine, just PM me when you need it.

There is a guy on another forum that made a poker table with his bands. I think that you could do laminated sheets with bands and then glue them to the ceiling. I am sure there would some botl that would help out by sending you their bands. Or we could take it a bit further and scan in your favorite bands and make a printed collage that can be put on the ceiling. I think it would cost in the vicinity of 10-15 a sq ft.

Edit for spelling

I think going with a simple look would keep the walls more interesting. Luam plywood is rather inexpensive and is what is used in place of spanish cedar. It would keep the room a little brighter and give the image of a bigger room and you would have a nice cedar smell. You could even get creative with the trim boards that you use to hide the seams. Maybe wrap the trim boards with the cigar bands.

Sorry to hear about your situation, things will get better.

If you pick this idea I would rather you keep the winnings. Post a picture of the finished room with you and your wife enjoying the "prizes".

Thanks and Hope things get brighter for you and wife.

Nice. And I see you have them kind of organized, too. So that would make a mosaic - type pattern easier.

I found this ceiling -

(fits well with the picking the winner on Valentine's Day, too)

If something like that is out of the scope of your artistic ability, I would go with some sort of 'organized chaos'. Not all in line, or all in the same direction. Something like this:

akzvpg.jpg

A patchwork type of design... horizontal lines of one band, weaving with vertical lines of another. If there's not enough to cover the whole ceiling, I would say do the outside. Leave the middle empty. fill the empty space with a cigar print of some sort...like this:

11x8 hi-res Opus X band. :D Or maybe a giant map (Cuba, Nicaragua, etc.). But don't rush into it. I'd hate to spend a week putting bands up there and hate it afterwards. Best of luck to ya!

How many bands do you think it would take. Hmmmm. This may be the next contest.

Oh, you beat me to it! I was going to suggest an OpusX giant band on the ceiling. I think one large item like that or something not too busy, you don't want your attention directed upward too much. Think of a casino. Ever noticed the ceiling? They're usually flat black or something drab like a sky mural, while the floors have a crazy multicolored pattern on them.

Since I got beat to the punch, I will suggest getting a really nice ceiling fan with a fixture in the center of the room instead of off to the side. Something antique-y looking, maybe even tropical. Then paint the ceiling a muted solid color, like a light tan.

This is the celing in my living room, I'm going to do the same in the Man Cave in the spring. Knotty Pine is a great look and goes with just about everything and it makes the room brighter and seem bigger than it is.

Good luck with the job search and thanks for the contest.
