A while back I was told about a B&M on the north side of the city that I hadn't ever been too, it is a bit of a drive so I never headed up there. Well with my new job, I was in the area and decided to stop in. Great group of owners and employees and an AMAZING stock. I picked up some great smokes and have a few more boxes coming in the next couple days (more on that to come). Here is what I picked up today:

Box of Anejo 77 Sharks:

Two Opus #4's and a custom rolled Graycliff solomon that was rolled at their last event:

I hung out for about an hour and a half and got to talking about some of other boxes and sticks that I've been looking for and the Padron 80th's and BTL's came up. They had the BTL in stock and said the Padron's likely came in today in their shipment that they hadn't got to. I'm likely going to pick up a box of the BTL's that I'm going to keep all of, but I know there was a lot of talk on here earlier about the Padron 80ths. If they did indeed come in I'm going to buy a box if possible. If that happens, I'm willing to unload 6 or 7 of them to members on here that cannot get them in your area. If your interested in a couple, PM me and we can work something out.

All in all an excellent trip to what is now my the only place I'm going to be buying my cigars. A great atmosphere with great people. Can't wait to get back Friday after work.

Well, I just cracked open the box of sharks and what am I faced with? Yep, you guessed it, the dreaded Shark mold!! Box was sealed with plastic wrap and everything. This really rubs me the wrong way, I'm inspecting them now to see just how many are like this. What should I do in a situation like this?

If you're happy with removing the mold, then keep them. If you're not, call the shop and tell them you'll be bringing the box back shortly due to mold.

Call the B&M and ask for a return...or just dust off and smoke.

Ok here is the breakdown:

9 are ok
9 have a good amount of mold on the foot and wrapper
2 have a good amount of mold on the wrapper but not foot

Talk about a let down......

Boy, that sucks.

I'm guessing these are from last year's batch, but if you get a chance Ian, please ask at the shop if they're from the recent shipment. That would be worse news still.

I called them and they said to go ahead and bring them back which is all good. I'm going to see if they can just swap the molded ones out with singles of non-molded Sharks.

Once I get them all back, is it best to remove the cello, wipe them all down and store them without cello?

Uh oh. Guess I had better start taking the cedar sleeves off and inspecting... :0 :0 :0

Looks like I'll need to crack my box and do a stick by stick inspection also.

I had that happen last year with a box of sharks. Looked OK going into the humidor, two months later they were very moldy. The vendor was a champ and refunded my money, no questions asked.

Some guys will tell you to "brush 'em off and smoke 'em" but I've never had any luck with that. In my experience, by the time you can see mold, they are usually gone. Like smoking old moist gym socks....just f'n nasty. I'd return them. I think you are doing the right thing....painful as it may be.

Good luck - B.B.S.

So you think I should return the whole box then? I guess the issue is that I doubt he's going to want me ripping cello off each box of Sharks searching for the "perfect" box. In this situation think I should just call it a day on the sharks and be done with it or should I try to just swap the bad for good? I mean 9 of em are ok with no mold what so ever.

If you noticeed, this box has the Blue rain drop humidity sticker on it which tells me that this box is probably from last year because none of the anejo boxes that I've seen from this year have this sticker on them.

Relavance: the sticker signifies that the box has a humidipak inside. The new release has no sticker hence no humidipak as a result of the mold problem from last year.

I just picked up a sealed box of sharks yesterday and it does not have that sticker in fact none of the sevn boxes I saw yesterday had it.

THIS is a let down!
DAMN, please put NSFW on this link.
I don't need to get fired for looking at this trash...

NSFW might seem to be a stretch, but not so. Exposed flesh catches the human eye. Even Jennifer, God I LOVE her Hewitt shoulda been NSFW. One complaint in corporate USA and it's over.

Ian, I would wipe and smoke. I'd be a bit nervous with keeping them, so I would set aside a fiver and sell the rest here - with the cavaet that they're known to have had mold. I know guys who would buy a fiver anyhow for short term destruction.

edit to add: just saw your note that they're dated 9/07. Take em back!

I was wondering about that! Thanks for clarifying.

Eric (Jack Shwartz) I see you viewing. What say you?

I would return, you don't need the headache.

Looks like they're going back then. It's a damn shame because Sharks are non-existent around here too. :( I will see if he has a box from this years shipment with no humi-pack and see how that goes. If not, it seems like the overall consensus is return the whole box, not just the ones with mold to be swapped out for new ones, correct?
