I wrote that this had to change back in 2001 during my exit interview. My idea was that if the unit you were in didn't take fire, you don't get combat pay. This crap about being in a "combat zone" 500 miles away never sat right with me. I see that congress is going to be nicer then I am though.

And a lot of pogues at Al Udeid. Oh well. HF and HDP are now prorated like the article says. Good move on the part of Congress.

I'm with you, make "combat pay" for those of us at the sharp end of the spear. Pay more to the guys (and gals) who are out there everyday risking their lives on patrols and living with the reality of a two-way range. I think the pogues should just deal with the pay cut since they are spending most of their time at the gym and the MWR after hitting the PX for the third time that day.

I'm waiting for them to start pro-rating the tax exclusion pay, too, for those folks that only go in for a week and get the month tax free. People like me. Don't get me wrong; I like the money. I don't think the current policy is right, though.

IDP should just go away. You already get Family Separation, which is about the only "hardship" you have in many of those locations outside of the actual combat zone.

I've always had a hard time with what I consider woefully low compensation that our military receives.
For one of the few areas of our lives that I feel the Government has to be involved in, these folks should get much more for the sacrifices they and their families endure.
