Humidor Smell *Update*

A friend of mine made a coolerdor and noticed what he described as an "odd smell" after it'd been storing cigars for a week or so. He pulled everything out, scrubbed down the cooler, and started over. The smell returned. The happy ending? He realized that the smell was just the smell of the cedar boxes. :)

Go to your local B&M and pay attention to what their walk-in humidor smells like. With any luck, your "problem" isn't really a problem and it's just the normal box smell.

Haha, its not the box smell, I love the box smell, fresh cedar..., anyways, I have the problem fixed now

The distilled water was some of it, but I found out it had something like a air filter built into the system, and it obviously had not been cleaned in years, and after cleaning that the smell was almost instantly gone... my cigars are finally happy again.

I got rid of the smell, but I decided to throw one of those ion/air cleaner things in there, just to see what it did. It's unbelievable! My humidor has the large glass door and the inside has of course shelves, etc. On the bottom it has another door, and you open it up and it has the humidification system, electrical, and air intake and duct work. I put the ion generator/fan down there, and I ran it for a few days. Wow! I can not believe how crisp the air is inside. It is like taking a step into the mountains. I smoked a cigar that I had a few of. I smoked one before I put the ion fan in there, for comparison. There is a difference. The one left in there tastes more pure and fresh than the first one did. I am surprised it made a noticeable difference on the cigars.

If I'm understanding you right it sounds like you got one of these "Sharper Image" esque devices and put it in the humi? I know those have been taking alot of flack for generating Ozone, which is harmful to human respritory systems, but I have no idea what it'll do to cigar. As long as the RH stays up!

Ozone is only bad for you is concentrated doses. I originally mentioned the ozone machine in this thread because I know first hand how well mine works. I paid $600 9 years ago and it is amazing what it can do. The "step into the mountains" analogy is spot on. The smell (to me) is identical to the freash air you get when you step out of a cigarette smoke filled bar. I use mine to clean the air in my hunting cabin when we smoke ten cigars on a cold winter night (with doors and windows closed) and the smoke is thick.

Glad it helped.
