Humidor Deal

I bought my current humidor from them, supposedly a 100ct for $1 and then 30 for shipping. It works absolutely great, except that it isn't quite 100, its more like 50-75, but still for that price i really can't complain too much. The thing was in mint condition.

I BOUGHT THE SAME HUMIDOR AS YOURS....HOW IS IT WORKING FOR YOU? I'M WORRIED ABOUT MINE BECAUSE IF YOU NOTICE THE SIDE PANEL WITH PLEXI ISN'T REALLY SEALED TIGHT FROM THE INSIDE.

ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREAT.

I have that same one from the same company. Seems to be holding humitidy just fine all glass in mine is plexi. but seems to be doing good. temp 73 and humidity is 71 and has been for about 2 weeks.

Well, the reason they are so cheap is because they're made of maple, not spanish cedar. So I had the hardest time getting rid of the maple smell. I aired it out for weeks, stuck baking soda in there and even tryed to sand it. So finally, I bought some planks of spanish cedar and lined the entire inside with spanish cedar. The cedar completely killed the maple. Actually, lemme go take some pics of it, I did a bit of mods to it to triple it capacity :) .

Basically, what I did was turn it on it's side. I bought 2 spanish cedar trays from bargain humidors. I then drilled out 2 holes on each side and put the pegs that the humidor came with in those holes. The little shelves that hold the 2 tray are the sides of the maple trays; I drilled holes in them so that they fit on the peg. The lego pieces are there because I suck at drilling and made thing uneven a lego was the closest thing I could find :laugh: And obviously the darker planks of wood on the bottom and sides are spanish cedar that I so masterfully installed with a staple gun :sign: The remainder of the wood was used to make dividers in the bottom. The seal actually quite good, as the hygro shows it stays at a constant 64-65%, which is what the beads are rated to do. And yes, that is ALL of my cigar collection :whistling:
 
Soooo... If it is maple what is the down side? Will it impart an undesirable taste? I'd think if you can store them in a plastic box that maple would be ok to.
 
yes, maple gave it an undesirable taste and smell. Plastic, when properly cleaned, does not give off any smells.

Well the inferior woods in these fake humidors do not absorb moisture, which means your humidor will never be seasoned, and will never be able to keep your cigars fresh. As a matter of fact, this wood will actually take moisture from your cigars, leaving them dry and crumbly,

Couple of things about making sense. He says the wood in these humidores does not absorb moisture and tey will never be seasoned. Does the plastic in a coolidore ever get seasoned? Then he goes on to say the wood will auctially dry out the cigar. Now how is that going to happen if it dosen't absorb moisture?

Also, if you google "fake humidors" there are 5 listings and his is on top. One of the others is a forum with this guys copy pasted in it the others don't relate to the topic.

If this was a issue wouldn't the community have blown it all out of proportion by now? :thumbs: :laugh:
 
That's exactly the same humidor that gave me the inspiration for the design of the one I built. The one on e-bay is small for sure, I saw one at my B&M and was really dissapointed with the size, but for what you paid for it, its a heck of a deal.

The prices are pretty amazing. Is there any way you can neutralize the maple?
 
I am by no means an expert, but could you not dispell the concerns regarding taste and humidity by using humidification beads from Viper (got them last week and now swear by them), and add pieces of Spanish Cedar to any of these boxes that they are referencing. I mentioned previously in this same thread that I did indeed by one from one of these sellers for less than $40. I am hesitant to ditch the thing as it is keeping spot on humidity at 66% with the beads, and with the addition of some Spanish cedar, could alleviate any concerns regarding taste. Just curious to see what other people thought.
 
Did a little investigation work and found that the eBay page I bought mine on about a month ago (which I still had the link to in my eBay) claims that is was indeed lined with Spanish Cedar. Same page for the same humidor selling right now does not claim it was lined with Spanish Cedar. As I doubt the construction of these humidors have changed, looks like the sellers is trying to cover his own a$$ for false advertising.
 
The original poster makes a point but he is a competitor so take the info with a grain of salt. I got one of the 300 ct. models and it works great. It has the maple but the same cigars taste just as good as the ones I have stored in my spanish cedar humidor I have right next to it. For the money these humi's can't be beat. I am getting another for the office.

I've been smoking cigars long before it was a poser trend, although that trend has passed for the most part. I just wondered about the maple thing. My taste buds aren't that ultra-sensitive, I guess, to pick up the difference between stogies in maple-lined 'dors versus those in cooladors or spanish cedar walk-in closets. Helped a friend get a tobacco shop started 10 years ago and have been involved since. As with anything, everyone has opinions and there are elitists and sweathogs and everyone inbetween. This site has been great to find deals and I only came across it a month ago. I don't consider the humidors in question to be "fake", just cheap. I have both cheap and expensive and both kinds have kept my cigars ready to smoke. Maybe I'm not fussy enough. Hope to learn a lot more on this site.
