How do you cut it?

For me, I use what ever is close. I really like to use a v-cut on torps, it opens the head of the cigar nicely.

I've been known to punch cut, guillotine, v-cut or just plain bite a hole into the cap. I know I'm a heathen! :p

I use my Xikar cutter. At first I found it hard to manipulate the cutter and steady it enough to cut a nice piece off of the cap. My first few attempts at cutting resulted in shards of tobacco in the garbage can, but after holding the cutter with my thumb and middle finger I have easily mastered this awkward and clumsy (yet very reliable) cutter.

I use a Xikar or a cigar scissor but what I really like a a V-Cutter. However, I could not find a decent (as in stay sharp) and not pricey. Hopefully one of our vendors would make recommendations.

I like the V-cut because its good for both the torpedos and the parejos but less room for mistake in my experience. (what can I say, I am all thumbs) I get enough smoke and less unraveling.

I had the same coordination problems with the Xikar 'V' cutter until I saw CigarDawg use one (I notice shit like that, eh Scot?). He put the cutter flat on the table top, set the cap in the hole, then snipped. It automagically paced the cut to take just enough for a good draw without inciting the wrapper to unwrap. It works great with all but PCs - them I still cut manually, taking less than I would using the above method.

I like to use punches. I have lots of different sizes depending on what size cigar I am smoking.

For some of you new guys, here is a link to a post reviewing cutters and punches: link

I use a punch whenever possible, less trauma to the head. Anyone had much success with a V-cut?, never used one myself. my buddie only uses a V-cut on torpedo's, thought that was a little weird, but it works....

I use my trusty xikar multitool.
This thing is so handy! And to think i used to chew the tip off..LOL!!

Great info junkman, thanks for the link.

Anyone used a guillotine style cutter that is long in length and has a small hole at the end with a mini axe looking thing that cuts down on it?

I can't find a picture of it at the moment, but maybe with the description someone else knows what I'm talking about. I'll keep looking.

Yea, I know what you mean does it have a burlwood handle and look like a torture device.?

I used one of these once when we still had a local shop. :(

It worked OK but seemed impractical for carrying around. It got a lot of use at the shop, though.

I generally use a double guillotine. I also have some of those crazy 3 bladed scissors from Cuban Crafters. Those took some practice to master, but they work pretty good. Again, not real portable. I like to use a punch, too, but the one I have seems pretty small. I haven't had much luck double punching (I guess I'm kind of clumsy) so I'd like to find a bigger one sometime.

Never tried the "flick" method, but I've scraped a few caps off with my teeth a couple of times. Not real elegant, but it works.

Yea thought that is what you meant, my friend just got one yesterday, and it is a V-cutter or notch cutter, made in China though and appears to be cheap. Can't testify to how well it works.

I use one of three different cutters depending of course on the cigar and what/where I am. At home it's either Xi3 cutter or the Donatus punch. The Donatus is actually two different size punches - you simply turn the screw cap to get whatever size you need - the act of closing it ejects the cap.
If I am going out then I normally take the Colibri - it also has a small built in punch cutter - so I'm covered no matter what. Also due to the cost of the Donatus and Xi3 - the Colibri is the cheaper so if it gets lost of whatever.

I use both, I have a lighter with a punch, for the countless times I forget to bring a cutter. the Xikar works great, I need to send it back cause the springs broke so it doesn't hold itself open anymore. I have a friend who uses a V cutter, he has his own technique where he makes a V cut, then another V cut 90 degress to the first, works for him, I have never tried it.

When I was first started to smoke I would use a punch because I was afraid of cutting to far up and ruining it. Now that I have a little more experience I pretty much only use a guillitine. I might try this "flicking" the cap off that moki posted.

It works very well... just need to practice it to do it right...

That depends if I am in bed and the wife is still awake. If she is awake I laugh my ass off at the real bad ones while she gets some Lysol. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. ;) as I slowly pull the sheets up over her head.

I use the Palio and I love it.

I use both. On bigger ring gauge cigars like a Perdomo Cuban Parejo I punch it. On most however I use my cutter. I might have to look into this flick the cap method however....it's intriguing!

Got my Xikar Xi-202 lapis in yesterday. So I've ditched my $3.00 airport special.

It cuts very smooth, very pleased. I went with blue, hehe.
