Help with a wristwatch...

Face scratched, bracelet worn to all hell, chrono buttons don't like to cooperate... Just time for a new watch... Like I stated earlier, I'm rough on my watches... And no I won't buy something cheap! Even though I know I will destroy it, looks and quality are important to me.

Find out about getting it repaired/reconditioned...may be cheaper than a new watch.

I've always been a fan of Seiko watches. I have 4 or 5 of them. I've got 4 years of commercial fishing, crabbing, and being a rig pig on one and it still works great.

There are some amazing prices on Ebay.

Fossil. It's on the cheaper side and durable, atleast IMHO. I have this one, only it has a round face. I've had it for two years, good watch.

Although looking at there site, this one looks pretty cool.
That second one does look kinda neat. Here's a video of it in action, btw. I think you have to push a button each time you want to see the time, though, and it's got those stupid animations. The calendar may be convenient.

Love my Oris Artelier Complication. PM for more info. ;) TD

I have a titanium Roven Dino that is going on 10 years, not a scratch on the face and the band still looks great. I think it cost $500 . Great watch.

Don't make any purchases yet. My cousin used to be a jewelry guy, went to gemology school in San Diego and the whole works. He bought this watch a couple years ago that was absolutely the sh.t. The band smelled like chocolate. No kidding, the f'n band smelled like chocolate. On top of that it was just an excellent watch. I think he paid around $500 for it. Let me find out what it was and I'll edit the post.

By the way, what's up with that collar around your dog's neck. Looks like an East African design? That might sound weird, but remember I was the Peace Corps guy.

I am also hard on watches. With my recent watch purchases, I have made an effort to get hardened crystals (natural or man-made). This has made a huge difference in the way my watches look after some wear. Many Seiko's use a man-made crystal (Hardlex, I think it is called) that is very durable. Many higher-end watches (Omega, Breitling, Rolex, etc) use natural crystals that are very hard. A tough, durable watch that is pretty rugged and worth repairing can become a heirloom timepiece.

I have been wearing my current watch for almost 5 years and it still looks pretty new. The crystal is unscratched and looks brand new. The band is showing some wear but can be re-polished (I've polished it once). The crystal is amazingly durable and tough. I've bashed it good against metal and concrete. I've scraped paint off stuff with it. I've worn it spray painting and it had so much overspray on it, I took mineral spirits and a rag to it.

The watch itself is tough as nails. It has been SCUBA diving and drenched in motor oil. I've dropped it (although not hard enough to break it) and I've worn it while using a chain saw. I routinely clean it with an old toothbrush while I'm in the shower. I've worn it continuously for over 70 days. The lume stays bright enough to tell time when I wake up at 3:00am.

A good (expensive) watch can be a surprising value. I plan to wear this one for every day for 40 years and then give it to my son or maybe his son.

Plus I'm a sucker for the see-through back...love to watch it run...for such a little, delicate machine, it keeps good time!

Whatever you get, go for a tough Sapphire crystal and good water resistance.

Alright, I like it even more now.

BTW, thanks for the link to the video because this fold-able LCD screen is AMAZING! (it's not on the watch but I saw a link from the watch to this video)

wow

BigSlick: That watch looks very nice... I'll have to look into it a bit...

tsmckenney: thanks for the info... I will wait to hear more from ya... Chocolate huh? wierd...

jgohlke: That Omega looks really nice. I'm looking into them as well. Exhibition backs are always cool! What did you pay for yours?

Thanks for all the info guys!

It's an Oris. However, it cost twice what I thought. Sorry about that. And yeah, a watch that smells like chocolate is weird. That's what I originally thought, but I have to tell you, that was the sweetest watch, period.

"Get a man's timepiece." Seriously, that is funny.

Been wearing this one (o.k. not this EXACT one) daily for almost five years now:

It's getting all beat to hell also, so I've been looking at this one, for my next daily wear watch.

Omega makes a variety of watches. Mine is sort of on the plain side, but it's an easy watch to wear with everything I own (from shorts to suits). You can check out their webpage for their full catalog.

Be careful about buying online. Anyplace that offers their own warranty in place of the manufacturers is a "gray-market" store. Some of them even file off the serial number on the watch before they sell it. That may or may not be important to you.

If you have a Jared's near you, they are a good place to look and offer a pretty decent discount off retail. Plus they seem to have a clue.

Other options include the internet, but most of the places you'll find with Google are not authorized Omega dealers. If you get serious about it, checkout timezone dot com, the Omega forum. If you lurk a bit you'll figure out what to do....

You can search the web for an idea of their retail prices. The gray market places give up to a 40% discount, but don't expect that much from an authorized dealer...I think Jared gives about a 20% discount, you can do a little better with some lurking and patience.

I've got a Seiko Kinetic "Sports 120" that I've worn damn near nonstop for the past 10 years. Originally I bought it just to wear on occasion, but eventually started wearing it all the time once I realized how tough it is. I haven't been able to scratch the crystal.....the whole thing still looks like new. I couldn't be happier. Kinda pisses me off in a way, because I really like watches. No matter how hard I try, I just can't justify replacing it.
