I wasn't going to chime in...but I've decided this needs to be said:

Dave, you need to find a graphic designer to take this on. I know you don't have a huge budget for the task, but that's no excuse. Call up a local arts school, technical institute, etc. Tell them you have a project for a talented student and you are willing to pay X number of dollars to the student. It'll work.

This decision is too big to be made by a bunch of cigar smoking schmucks (myslef included). And whether or not you are in a small community where personal relationships are important is irrelevant. You are your brand and your brand is you.

About the guy who's up on the soapbox preaching to you: I'm a PR pro. w/ past branding experience. Preserving the image of a 41 billion dollar company is what I do for a living. Take my advice Dave: Get someone to present you with at least 10 professional-quality logos. If you plan to have a succesful business w/ goals of growth and prosperity, you need to do this.

This is exactly what I've been trying to do for him; see the 8 designs my friend did up (and she's doing more):

We just need more input from Dave on he image he wants.

You are 100% correct, sir. Guess you DID learn something in college after all. ;) Damn, I can't bag on you anymore.

Hush, what do you know? A little rainbow-gradient Palatino with a drop shadow is all a man could ever need!

Again, I agree with you. Taking a poll here for what would be the best logo is like taking a poll here for what's the best way to treat your chronic migraines, and then going with the most popular answer, and ignoring what the one or two doctors in the forum had to say about it.

::shrug:: I give up. I tried Dave; sorry it turned into this. Good luck with your ad/logo.

Just for a refresher, and to put them both in context next to each other, here is DaveWF's original ad, with the original logo:

...and here is lbrief (Frank)'s ad, with the beannie logo (w/o the beannie):

you know,
it was mentioned earlier that color is being/can be added. I'd recommend keeping this B&W. It shows class and a hint of traditional business value. What might set it off a little (if you truly want color) is to add a splash of color to the "DWF" part of the logo - like a vertical or diagonal fade from black to navy blue back to black.

Regardless, this is a fantastic looking ad!
