To continue with my night of smoking last night, I burned a HdM Epicure No 2, date coded Oct 04.
This was probably the most solid built cigar that I have ever seen or felt. I swear, if you didn't decide to smoke it, you could just bludgeon someone into submission with it. The wrapper was beautiful, dark brown with a reddish tint. There were some small veins, but nothing detracting. The pre-light nose was of great cuban tobacco, earthy and slightly sweet. The pre-light draw was firm, almost tight.
The cigar lit up easily, but the draw remained just a little too firm. The smoke was plentiful, but not quite as thick as I would have liked it. The cigar, however, burned sharp as a razor, never becoming uneven. It also stayed cool down to a nub, even with me trying to work smoke through it. The ash was white and, as expected, very firm. The draw loosend just a bit toward the end.
The flavors, especially on the first 1-2 inches was fantastic. It started with coffee and earth, with just a hint of the nuttiness/toastiness that I so often taste in good cuban cigars. Not as pronounced as the RASS, but there none-the-less. As it developed, it moved toward medium-to-full in body and became more earthy as it went. The coffee never completely disappeared, but was enhanced by some charred wood flavors. Great cigar.
While this cigar was very enjoyable, IMHO, they are going to be fantastic in about a year. Can't wait to age them up and smoke'em.
