So, there was an audio shop on the corner where the bus stop was in Innsbruck last weekend (I assume it's still there, but the economy is volatile...). It was a real mom 'n pop looking electronics place. The window displays really reminded me of the towns around me growing up. Anyway, they had a window full of turntables, and not a single one started below €1,000. Is it really that expensive just to get into the game?
TT is right. The Pro-ject Carbon is a very nice TT (hey, look at that, turntable and Texas Traveler have the same acronym). Several models by Music Hall are well below that price and good TT's, as well (I have one). U-Turn Audio in Boston makes some very decent TT's priced beginning as low as a couple hundred bucks (ditto). You can get a good vintage Dual rebuilt for under $500 (ditto). There are others.
There are people who won't put a record on anything less than a $10,000.00 TT, and there are shops that will not sell even the decent lower priced ones. The Turntable Lab in Manhattan sells really fine TT's but also stocks some like the above, a good source.
Turntables are kinda like fly rods. No one really has to have one, and you can catch a nice trout with a $20 rig from Walmart. But once you've fished with a nice Sage, you will not want to hold that Walmart thing in your hand ever again.
Edit: BTW, I didn't expect Justin to post it here, we did this via PM's, but I'm thrilled to see that fine young man enjoying the AT.
