Good lighter recommendation

I found this in my search, but does anyone else have a really good lighter recommendation aside from the info here? I'm currently using a Bic and while its getting the job done, since I can't really control the flame, I end up giving a good toast to the rim of my pipe and my thumb along with the tobacco. :laugh:

I'm thinking Zippo might be the way to go, but I just wanted to see if anyone had some really strong recommendations or comments on the matter.

If I remember correctly, the IM Corona comes highly recommended. But I do not own one and have never used one, so can't say from personal experience.

Zippo, all the way, IMHO. The Old Boy has rave reviews. I can't comment because I have never tried one. More than anything my problem with that one is price - seems a little silly to light a $50 pipe with $90 lighter.

The biggest technical benefit to the Zippo is that the design allows for the flame to go straight up and down, where any butane lighter has to be directional. The flame naturally wants to go up. This means you can hold the Zippo directly over the bowl, draw the flame down light the tobacco and then when you release your draw the flame will go straight up, not touching the rim of you pipe. Even the most expensive butane lighters require a bit of an angled flame, which gives you a greater chance of charring your rim when you release your draw and the flame goes back up.

Zippo = cheap, easy, effective. Also, its American made with one of the best warranties out there.
 
One important thing: make sure to use the actual Zippo fluid. The cheap stuff really does have a terrible smell to it that will come through in the taste.
 
I use both an Old Boy and a Zippo with a Thunderbird butane pipe insert. The Old Boy is top notch and excellent quality. Butane seems to last forever in it. When I was using a regular Zippo pipe insert, it seemed if I let it set for awhile without using it the fluid would evaporate too quick for my liking. It's much nicer with the butane insert I think, just not quite as wind proof.

Ditto, couldn't say it any better. Have been using my pipe Zippo for years. Still lights as good as day one.
 
I agree with Pipe Smoker about the Old Boy... In fact I use it only with high grade pipes...
 
Anyone had any experience with the Jetline Bolla? Looks very similar to a Xikar Resource pipe lighter, but it has a fuel window I think? Saw one in a Tinder Box awhile back and have been scoping them online. They can be had for 25-30 bucks I think. Just curious if anyone knew about the quality of them...

My lcfun is a double arc lighter, which is 5 times faster and safer than a single arc electronic lighter. Compared with ordinary butane lighters, it is windproof and flame retardant without flame, and it can work well in rainy and windy days.
 
I've got at least 4 Xikar lighters bought sense i joined this forum and have had to have 2 fixed. Life time warranty is great but a $40 to $50 lighter should break down if only good butane is used. I just bought a box of these.

Same here! Bought three of them in Florida on vacation earlier this year. I find myself reaching for them more than my Xikar lighters. I like that I don’t constantly have to refill them with butane.
 
Agreed, those Eagle lighters are bullet proof and if it does go belly up, you don't feel bad tossing them.
