Golf clubs and how to select them

So, Jeff...now that you know I play golf, you'll have to stop in Charlotte to play a round the next time you're on your way to Hilton Head.

You got it bro!

I've always really wanted to learn to play golf because it is one thing my father really enjoys doing. He is only 57 but I would really like to spend some father-son time on the course before he is unable to do so. They live on quite a bit of land and he has his own little driving range set up so when I go out there I try to hit a few balls and really have to contain myself to avoid throwing the club! I enjoy watching golf and think I'd have a good time playing it but I don't think God gifted me with the ability to do so. Great and informative post and if I decide to try and give it another go I'll definitely read over this again to get some good tips.

Thanks!

Do yourself a favor and if you are going to take up the game start practicing putting and chipping before you ever "hit" a golf ball. This will teach you the most important part of the game first but even more important, when you do start playing you will start each hole with a goal of getting to what you know best.

Very good tip on the short game first. Everyone loves to drive but on most courses you hit the big stick 12-14 times!

I just bought all new clubs for the season a couple weeks ago. Went with Calloway X-Forged Irons, Taylormade superquad, taylormade 5 and rescue TP, and taylormade satin TP wedges. Can't wait to start playing again. I'm at about a 10 handicap and want to get down to a 6 hopefully this year.

I totally agree with that, I will and do most weekends just go out to the yard and "chip around" as much as I can. I believe that my short game is my best game, I can't drive 'em as far as Tiger or "Lefty" but I pride myself on my short game. As far as I am concerned that's where it counts (also includes putting). Hell mostly that's the only thing that my foursome uses in tourney's.

Ben, good luck with all the new stuff, you will find that it will take a while to get used to all new equipment. It will look and feel odd for a while. As far as going from a 10 to a 6 that is a tall order my friend. Assuming all things are equal i.e. all handicaps are legitimate USGA index, it's easy for a 20 handicap to move down to a 19, it's difficult for a 10 handicap to move down to a 9 and it's exceptionally hard for a 5 handicap to move down to a 4. They say that once you are in to single digit index, every point you shave off is exponentially harder than the previous one. Keep in mind, too, that you are approaching a point where there is very little room for improvement.

Shouldn't be too hard. The normal course I play at I am right at like a 6. Its the newer courses that kill me. Ill have a lot more time to play this year than ever before so I'm shooting for it. I have to keep up with my brother who is trying to turn pro this year and is a +1.

Very nice! I wish you both good luck

I love golf and finally this long cold winter is just about over. I've been hitting balls with the kiddos these past few days and my swing feels like an unfolding lawn chair. I hate the early-season rust.

I've been a +2 for the past five or six years and play in all of the state amateur tournaments. Towards the end of last year my putting completely left me and I ballooned up to a 1 handicap. I'm hoping that was just a mental anomaly and this year I can get back to playing better golf.

That's terrible ;) Is it possible that you still putt with a blade? You are reaching that age where it may be time to go to a MOI putter. Good luck......I hope you get back to the +2.

I am very impressed. A +2 is really good. My index 8.6, and I am setting a goal of 7.5 for this year.

I putt with a Cameron Newport (basically a Ping Anser design) but am going to try a new putter this year. What's funny is that when I was at my best two summers ago (+2.2) my putting was on fire. I would get into a groove and make everything.

My short game suffered last year as well. Luckily the kids like going to the short game area so I'll be spending a lot of time there this year.

I'm jealous, I "had" to have a good short game because my iron game was the weakest part of my game and I belonged to a club that had small, crowned greens. When I went from a blade type putter to an MOI putter my putting improved drastically.
