Getting your feet wet Pass II

I have a question. Let's say one of your particularly favorite smokes is the Arturo Fuente Hemingway Classic Natural, and you like to share them with friends from time to time. When the Pass comes your way and the original AF Hemingway has been taken is it proper etiquette to put another one in? Or, can a particular cigar be in the mix once and only once?

From what I have observed in other passes, as long as your puts are equal to your takes, it's okay to put in sticks that have been in the pass already. I think the biggest thing that the pass host tries to avoid is getting to many of any one particular stick in a pass. For example: If there are 3 DPG blue labels in the pass when it reaches you, you probably don't want to put another one in.

I would see no problem with you putting in your hemingway classic.

 ...wonder where you got that one from!

Each case is different in how it's handled by the pass host. I've been in large passes where the host didn't want any dup's and others where they didn't mind. As far as I go, I'm pretty flexible on it. This is a learning pass so I want you to be able to get what you want to try so I won't be a stickler about dup's. What I don't want to see is 4 DPG Cuban Classics floating around in the pass. The main thing is to be considerate of the guys still left to get the pass. Would you want a pass coming to you with a nice selection or a pass showing up on your doorstep with 40 cigars and 4 being DPG Blue Label Generosos, 3 LFD Lanceros, and so on. As far as the different vitolas go, that's absolutely acceptable. Just try to use good judgement and ask yourself " If I was the next guy in the pass, would I be happy with the selection left?".

I'll have the cigar list updated later tonight and the third contest awaiting you guys in the morning.

I was inquiring more as to putting in sticks that were already in and taken out rather than duplicating one or more that are already in the tupperdore when it gets to you, but I believe that answers my question. .

Thanks -
Tom

I would say you would be fine to do that. If it's good enough for the pass when it starts, it's good enough for the pass when it's going.

And yes Brian, I did remember that from following the first GYFW Pass. However, if this pass made it to me with 3 LFD lanceros in it, I wouldn't be all that upset.

Is there a max # of takes? And can I put 1 or 2 sticks with equal value and rarity as 3 or 4 I take out?

There is a max # of takes of 7 as stated in the first post.
One thing I will insist on is each person making between 3-7 trades out of the pass. It does no good to make one or two trades because it usually costs anywhere from $10-$20 to ship.

As far as putting in multiples to get one or taking multiples with one, the answer is no. This is a learning pass, so all puts and takes will be on a 1 for 1 basis. This is always a pass hosts discretion and some guys let it go in their passes if theres something that is really wanted, but things need to be simple and easy to keep up with in the pass. Very good questions guys, keep them coming!

Sorry for not answering your question directly there Doc. As far as putting a cigar back into the pass that was once there, I have absolutely no problem with.

I have one question. Do we need to know our P&T before it arrives to us. I know some passes are that way. Being that many of us are new we are not as familiar with all the names. Can we wait until we see the box or will it slow the pass down to much.

Good day to you all.

While I am not involved in this pass, I am a n0oB and so I plan on taking the opportunity to learn about passes through observing this one.

I created a spreadsheet last night with all the cigars listed in this pass and then researched the prices and included them in the SS as well. While doing this I noticed that the price range per stick is very wide and differs by $25 or more per stick from the low end to high.

I have a question for the pass hosts that is based simply on curiosity. How do you decide what sticks are in the pass at the start? Is it random or do you tend to follow a theme of sorts?

BTW for those involved in this pass, I learned a couple valuable points while creating the spreadhseet.

1. There are a LOT of cigar retailers online and yet I haven't found a single one that carries everything on the pass list. This forced me to learn more about online retailers and helped me put together a list of sites for future use.

2. Vitolas, vitolas, vitolas... every mfg. seems to have unique names for some of their creations that vary from the industry standard. Not everyone sells the Robusto, Torpedo, Churchill, Corona etc... as that, they like to give them fancy names to throw me off so I'm relegated to really paying attention to length and ring guage and then translating their language into mine. It's almost like learning a foreign language

3. Rarity - I've heard it said here several times that rarity is not an exact science and can be subjective at times. One thing I learned while looking up pricing at the online retailers is that for many cigars you can gain insight into the rarity factor by looking at how the retailer sells them. For example if I am looking up a specific cigar and every retailer I go to lists the item as "sold out", "backordered" or "not available until October 2008" etc.. then it is fairly safe to assume that it is a cigar that has a limited production run each year. Does that necessarily make it a "rare" cigar, maybe not, but it does put it into the category of popular and/or HTF.

Conversely, if I look up a cigar and it is not only available but is on sale as a "buy one box, get one free" deal then it is safe to assume it is a daily smoke, not HTF and easy to decide how to deal with in a put/take situation.

Anyways, enough rambling for now. I'm looking forward to this pass starting so I can sit on the sidelines with notebook in-hand, keep track of the stats as it progresses and learn something!

Have fun

Danny

Is there a copy of any such spreadsheet rolling around anywhere? :whistling:

OK, let me try to answer these as painlessly as possible.
1) With this being a learning pass I wanted there to be a fairly wide variety of cigars in the pass, hence your $25 variation. This pass I have set up a little more on the high end than I did the last time because I wanted to see how people that haven't been in a pass before trade on a higher scale than what I normally do when I run a newbie pass. So for me this is just as much a learning pass as it is for everyone else.
2) Retailers.....The way I usually get my prices on cigars that don't have a set MSRP is I use Cigarcyclopedia, take the three lowest box prices, average them, divide them by the box count and it gives me a working dollar value.
3) Vitolas,...like you said, all manufacturers have different ways of naming their cigars but they are listed the way I list them on the first post in cigarcyclopedia so there's no confusion.
4) Rarity....this is something that no one person can put their finger on. As far as trades go involving rare or htf cigars, I alone determine whether or not the trade is acceptable or not. This is something you can pick up over the course of time dealing in passes. For example: a WOAM MSRP's around ~$7.50. That doesn't mean you can put an $8 Camacho in for a trade. The WOAM is a semi annually released cigar with limited availability so it automatically draws more than what MSRP is.

Good questions and I'm impressed with your following of the pass, trying to figure things out, and making your spreadsheet. Would you like a spot in the pass?

Would you like a spot in the pass?

I didn't think I qualified at this point since I just joined CP less than two months ago. However, if the pass host and current participants have no objection in having me participate then yes, I'd be honored to join in this pass.

It is a very simple SS to setup. I simply copied the list of cigars Jonesy posted (it's in a tabled format already) then pasted them into an Excel worksheet.

The rest is just a matter of doing the research on cigars themselves and the pricing. I used several online retailers to determine pricing but since Jonesy is using cigarcyclopedia I will adjust my pricing to match his source so I am on the same page with the host.

The pass won't be starting until the middle of September so you are good there and as I am the judge, jury, and executioner around here, it's my say if you can join the pass....so welcome aboard!

Thank you for not deciding to execute me!!

Thanks for the spot, I'm looking forward to the pass!
