Getting a Jeep

AMATEURS!

1972 CJ5
4" lift
33" Mud Terrains (my STREET tires)
31x15x15 Goodyear Terra Tires (my offroad tires)
1970 Corvette LT-1 350 (tweaked of course)
1970 T-10 tranny (mated to Jeep T-18 transfer case with adapter)
custom Currie Enterprise Ford 9" front/rear axles w/disk breaks, limited slip front, locker rear
full roll cage, bucket seats, 5 point harnesses, and many other goodies added I forgot.

Sadly, I no longer have this Jeep... got married and it was not the best vehicle for us. If I could have afforded a second, daily driver I would still have it. But, as it stands, I'm always keeping my eye out for an old flat fender Willys jeep (Cj2 or 3) to restore. Of all the cars I've had, I miss the Jeep the most. I used to drag race it (I could pop the front end 3 feet off the ground!) and mud bog with it... guys in their huge pickups would get mad at me when I'd do laps around their truck when it was stuck

I'll see if I can dig up the pics... somewhere I have a shot of me dug into the mud so bad it took 3 3/4ton pickups chained to me at the SAME time to pull me out!

Uhhh... Now that sounds like a JEEP!!!

update:

checked out an 04 loaded rubicon today. It's 5k more than I wanted to spend. Fiance is telling me to get it. Wallet is telling me not to....

I'm probably going to get it.

*insert bad word here*

Forget the four letter word (Jeep) and get an older Land Rover Defender 90.

That looks expensive man.

I think I'm heading out to buy my new Jeep in about an hour. We'll see. If they jack me around with the price, there's almost an identical one 45 minutes away.

Yeah, I'd take that 90 series over a Heep any day!!

(Particularly if I could get it with those Simex tires -- which aren't available at all in the US.)

okay, the Rubi ended up being waaaayyyyy too expensive especially when I didn't get what I wanted for my Benz (they found a chip in the windsheild I never knew I had, and they gave me crap about the failing onboard computer), SO - I didn't get it.

But I got this:

05 Rocky Mountain Edition Wrangler, inline six straight shift 6 speed with the dana 44 axle, fog lamps, perked up interior and tubular side steps. I'm pretty satisfied especially becuase it's got the tires I wanted on it too. 16k miles.

Very nice! Congrats on the purchase.

(Curious, though, why you're so enamored with the Wrangler GSA's that came on it from the factory? We call them GSA's "Get Stuck Anywhere's)

Defender do cost an arm and a leg. Now that you got a jeep, next is a lift, then off-road tires, then fog lights, etc. Jeeps are the best car/truck/suv (whatever you call them, besides a jeep) to make your own. Over 1,000,000 ways to customize it.

Thanks man. I am enamoured becuase I was planning on getting a base jeep with no extras and since this has a lot more than what I was expecting.

I was wondering about the tires also. In the off road world, those tires are not very good. The jeep you picked would be exaclty something I would buy also. Now you can build it the way you want it! You're going to have some serious fun. I might be mistaken, but I think you can put 32's on that jeep without a lift. Be prepared to get thos stepsides crushed when you go offroad.

Dang, this thread has me wanting to trade in my grand cherokee now!

Switching from an 02 Mercedes C320 to likely a 2000 Jeep TJ and I can't freakin wait. I actually found one I was about to buy but it turned out there was a deposit on it before I looked at it, so it slipped through my fingers. I have to play the waiting game now to find one that I like and get rid of my car. Oh well.

I've decided to make this switch due to our lifestyle change of moving to VA where I'm doing something outdoorsy every weekend (benz doesn't quite cut it with that). I had bought the benz when I was doing more than 3 hours worth of driving a day in Northern Delaware, but now that we moved and my commute is a whopping 8 minutes, I'm finally going to get the car I've always wanted but never made sense to have.

I've got plans for a convertible trailer in the mix right now so it will essentially be a pickup truck when I need it to be, and a toy the rest of the time.

Any other Jeep owners here?

You should look at getting a G500, since you already own a benz and are familiar with how nice they are. From the factory, they will beat the pants off any other vehicle for off-road capability. We've been mostly happy with ours, and now that we're in the mountains it's worth every penny!
