Geocaching

I just got a new hand held GPS unit so I can take my sons geocaching. It sounds like a lot of fun and I can't wait to try it.

Has anyone else picked up this hobby?

I do a lot of navigating by gps, but don't have an idea of what you are talking about.

I have... it's a BLAST!! we live right on the edge of the woods, and the area is used a lot for this. I know the area well, and in conjunction with my gps (Garmin GPSmap76) I do fairly well.

I have not tried Geocaching, but it looks like fun.

I use my GPS to find small holes in the ground (cave entrances) in remote backwoods areas of Virginia and West Virginia.
That is also a lot of fun. :thumbs:

yeah, i love doing this. Living near the woods, specifically Michaux, and Pine Grove, there is a ton of this. Great activity to get out and about!

we started a small program for soldiers here last year. we plan on expanding it this year have used it with kids as well hid some candy then let them find it with gps.

Yes, but the topo's are downloaded to the GPS and are displayed there.

Funny this shoudl get mentioned today. The warmer than usual weather turned my weekend's winter hiking and camping trip into a likely rain and slush-filled crapfest, so we cancelled, and instead are going to get rip-roaring drunk and smoke good cigars while geocaching around Ithaca, NY. Doing new activitites (first time for both of us) while intoxicated is always fun.

Edit: Speaking of which, anybody know if there are any really good cigar shops in Ithaca, or should i bring good cigars for everybody?

LOL... :laugh:

As a former paratrooper, I'm well versed with both map and compass. This is more of a "hide and seek" type of event than it is orienteering. Something I can do with my 12 and 14 year old boys.

I did a search on geocaching.com. There are more than 200 caches within a 3 mile radus of my zip code. :thumbs:

I teach map and compass to 11 thru 18 year olds all the time. They think it's boring as hell. This sounds like something they could get into. Where can I find more info.

My first run in with it was provisioning a team that did sports fishing.
Most of our equipment is GPS enabled and can run an application that is perfect for it off of the phones without using a handheld GPS- it was way cool to see how it worked. I was lucky enough to be a part of the demo team where a team of 5 data SMES did a land based savenger hunt and had the opportunity to see what the sport entailed, which really helped in training sales reps with product possitioning. until then I had no idea people ran around with GPS for the fun of it, I was used to the typical Worplace/ worker big brother is watching use for GPS! I had a blast!

I clicked on the 1st link and read the FAQ's and did the search to see if any caches exhisted near my are....and WOW there are a ton of caches in my little rinky dink town.

This sounds like a fantastic hobby, I can't believe that so many caches exist in my town and I've never heard of it before. Well it's off to the hunting store this weekend to purchase a couple GPS units. Can't wait and thank you for sharing this exciting hobby!

Some friends and I did it awhile ago with beer... went out and got a six of good stuff and a six of crap, and he and I planted them around. We got our other friends to find them and everybody got to take 2... you shoulda seen the ones that got two of the crappy beer! :laugh: whine whine whine...
