A Webber Kettle grill is hard to beat. Be certain to get a chimney charcoal starter. It is pretty quick to get a load of charcoal going fast and hot. You also avoid the need for a petroleum fire starter. You get the same effect as lighting a cigar with a Zippo (Yuck). A small gas grill is handy for a couple of quick hotdogs. Gas grill are not much different than using the broiler in your oven.
You can also experiment with different types of charcoal. Kingsford is good, lumps of unprocessed charcoal is even better.
