Oh boy oh boy, where do I begin with this..?
The whole "GameLover2004 issue" was brought to my attention in the Newbie Pass thread. My first impression was 6 or 7 single post users suddenly coming out and attacking his reputation. Now of course, hindsight has 20/20, but at the time it looked suspiciously like the low post count users where potentially all the same person. With one exception, the all joined on the same or very close date. It was all just a little fishy to me. Since then, I have learned that most if not all of them are "stand up guys" from the other boards.
After this first "attack", I received a couple of PM from GL asking for my assistance in this matter. He complained that his good reputation
on this board was being smeared by the trolls. And whether you like it or not, at that time all these folks from the other boards were nothing but trolls. They had nothing to contribute to the board and where only causing problems and fanning the flames. Since then, then only non-flaming posts I've seen from them (of course I could have missed some) have been the standard "you may know me as XXX on this other board, but I can vouche (sp?) for this new user ZZZ over here". I am not questioning their character, but all in all, the only thing they've been doing here is trolling.
Of course I'd like to see this change and have them all become active participating members here at CP - but until then, technically they're still just trolling. Anyway.... I was asked by GL if I could do anything about it. As I'm sure many of you are aware, banning is used only as a last resort here. We pride ourselves on being "The Friendliest Cigar Community" on the net and will do our best to work with our users to work out whatever problems may exist. I brought the whole matter up to Rod and he has asked me to handle the situation as (I'm sure many of you have noticed) he has been even busier then me recently and has not been on the board too much. I've done a little investigating and have received a number of PM's from various members - here is what I have learned (in no particular order)
GL is, in fact, on the "scumbag list" for running various "PIF scams"
The trolls that are flaming him here are upstanding users from other boards - but not here
(Here's the important one now)
GL has done
nothing wrong here. All trades/PIFs he has participated in to date have all gone smoothly.
Here is what is going to happen:
Nothing.
.
.
.
Yet.
In my correspondence with GL, he has claimed that "My reputation here at CigarPass should not be in question as I have never done anything wrong here or ever will". As a friendly community, we have no choice but to believe him - until if/when he proves us wrong. A few of you have already received PIFs from him - were they of cheesy quality? I'm not saying you should send him your box pass of ISOMs without concern, but we cannot convict a man blindly when he has claimed to "turn over a new leaf".
The bottom line is this - until he proves that he deserves otherwise, GL is to remain a member here. If that makes you uncomfortable - FINE! Then don't trade with him. We are, for the most part, a self-policing community. I feel that everyone is probably aware of his past reputation. I want to make sure that everyone is also aware of his current reputation here as well (so far, unless I'm mistaken, it's flawless). If you are not comfortable trading with him, then don't. If no one will trade with him, then one of two things will happen - either he will become an online contribuator only, or he will leave. If people do continue to trade with him, one of two things will happen - he will prove that he has "learned his lesson" and become a valued member of the community or he will screw someone and be banned immediately.
Here are my two suggestions to anyone that will be trading with him. First, document it on the board. There's nothing worse then finally finding out you were scammed and posting about it on the board, only to find out the scammer had trades going with half a dozen other members as well. If you post a thread in the trading forum and post the results as well, then - at the very least - you're warning other users that he has an ongoing trade and they may want to wait a bit before participating in another trade. Better that one member gets screwed then a whole bunch of members gets screwed.
Have the newbie (i.e. GameLover2004 - or ANY newbie for that matter)
send their end first. If you don't receive your end - then you don't send your end off. Also, when you do send your end, always use delivery confirmation (prevents the "I never received your package - you should send me another" situation).
Alright - I think that's about it for me. Sorry to have locked the tread, but I didn't want this getting out of hand and having a which-hunt start up before you heard the viewpoint and intentions of the mods (ok, just one mod) here. The conversation up till that point had been nothing but civil, but a thread like that had the possibility to blow up very quickly. I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.
The thread is now officially UN-locked.
