When did you get your first gun? I grew up shooting bb-guns in the backyard, but don't think I got a gun of my own until I was about 22. My brother is thinking of getting my 8-yo a .22 for Christmas. What are your thoughts about this? I personally think it is a fine idea and gives us something else to do together on the week-ends by going to the range. Any suggestions on brands that are suitable for little arms would be good as well.

James,

I have been shooting as long as I can remember, but my father taught gun safety before it was such a big issue (which it should be). Kids should be taught they are not a toy and it is a privilege to get to shoot. I bought my son a very light rifle when he was young and made sure he was always supervised when using it. Great bonding experience.

Excluding BB guns, I think I was eight or nine years old when I got a Marlin 22 rifle for Christmas.

I wish my father enjoyed firearms...something I'm passionate about but never got to experience with him.

As Ken said, I'm sure it'd be an awesome bonding experience. Take him to some ranges that have certified RSO's...then he'll have a better understanding of the importance of safety.

I'd also go with a bolt action .22 ... safest firearm to learn on. Stay away from Henry Repeating lever actions or semi-autos.

ETA: RSO = Range Safety Officer, a certification obtained through the NRA

I grew up plinking .22's with my pops. Its a fine way to create a bond and spend some weekends just hangin out. My father eventually led me into shotguns where I competed in trap shooting here in NM and I can honestly say that's some of the best times I've had with him. Just remember those kids can get excited and lose mussle control quite easily. Just be aware and don't jump on him too harsh if he does something unsafe, educate.

James, you probably can guess my opinion on this. Like, why the hell have you waited until he was 8?!?!?!?! I think I got my first .22 at 6 or 7, and my first 'big' gun at 10 (.243) but there are all kinds of rampant animals here to tame

I got my first BB gun when I was 6 and got my first "real" gun (single shot .410) when I was 8 for squirrel hunting. I got my first .22 the next year.

I think it's entirely up to you. You know your child better than anyone. If you decide now is the right time, have fun!

Personally, I think if they are old enough to understand and practice good firearm safety, then they are old enough for a firearm.

1997 - Army handed me a M-16 and a M9......never looked back.

I love to shoot, sold all my guns before I came to Belgium, but that was so I cold buy new ones when I go back
