Extremely Controversial Topic

I was at church the other day and overheard a few people discussing a very controversial, yet extremely important topic that I feel should be addressed on this forum.

Should there be playoffs in college football?
and, which conference is the most competitive?

The BCS dodged a potential bullet when VT lost this weekend, but the issue still needs to be adressed.
There enough good teams out there for even the best team to lose one game. USC has had a couple close calls, and is just a few plays aways from having a couple losses.

So, thoughts, oppinions, solutions?

absolutly. i pray that there will be 3 or 4 unbeatens this year to further my stance. id be really suprised of there are alot of guys here who disagree with me.

Yes there should, but I doubt it will happen any time soon.

Right now, the entire season is basically a play-off. You can sometimes get away with 1 loss if you lose early. But lose late and you're toast.

The best arguement I hear for the current system is from former and current players.

They say that it would be hell on them as players, playing possibly 3 to 4 games after the regular season ends, assuming you are implementing a system like Division I AA schools have now.

More injuries will occur and grad rates will drop,i.e. look at college basketball grad rates.

With a college playoff system you are looking at a possibly 16 to 17 game season for some teams.

IMHO that is way too many games for these guys to play at this level of competition. You have to remember that a lot them are students in addition to being athletes. While a playoff system is exciting to fans, you have to consider the players.

I'm also believe that for a lot of the Divison IA teams the games at the start of the season are pointless and could be cut out, dropping the season to a 8 or 9 game regular season. Then a playoff system might be a possibility.

you would obviously cut the regular season down to accomidate the playoff system. and the only reason ncaa football grad rate is better that ncaa basketball is because the minumum age for the nba is 18, versus 21 for the nfl.

I agree that cutting some non conference games would make room for a playoff system, but the argument against that gos right back to money. Smaller schools make a decent little pile of money every time they play a big time school, and they would lose that revenue. Plus, any team that does not make the playoffs would face a season that was 2-3 games shorter, which equals less money, and less chance to get noticed by NFL scouts. Then sny school without a good chance of making the playoffs will have a harder time recruiting.

Any thoughts on the toughest conference to play in?
How about the Big 12 getting all the calls when it comes to getting their teams into BCS games?

And the others are what ???

game film is great, but i assure you a players draft status is determined at the combine, not on the playing feild. just ask maurice clarett, charlie ward, dave klingler, josh hypel, andre ware, etc...

i have to admit, this season is looking pretty good for the bcs right now (damit). im licking my chops for that usc-ut matchup in january.

I think there should be a playoff, but as some of you guys have stated, they must reduce the number of games in the regular season. The non-conference games would have to be the first to go but maybe not all of them. If you took all of them away then you would lose some great rivalries. It should be a four team or maybe a six team playoff. IMO

Alabama looks like the team that will be left out this year if they get past LSU and Auburn.

This is two years in a row that the SEC will be left out. On the Sportsbash on ESPN Radio, Eric said that it is disrespectful to the SEC, maybe or maybe not, dont know.

The others are Matt Leinarts. Ball room dancing. :p

Let's face it, for some of these guys college is just a passing point in getting to play on Sunday where the real money is. Bad grades or good grades it doesn't matter. But for the majority of college players this is their last stop in the chain.

For me personally until they find a way to put a playoff system in to the College football, I'll never follow it again. These last two years with LSU/USC as Co-Champions and then the next year Auburn claiming they should be Co-Champions. They can never get a undisputed Champion. I'll just watch the NFL...at least I know how the Super Bowl champions are at the end of the season.

I think this sums it up pretty much. Cutting games from the season would make for a very short season. Ive had a grand total of 5 homes games to go to this year. We were expected to buy tickets, in addition to our season tickets, for the Navy game so I dont consider that a home game. Im looking at my calender right now and the last game for my Terps is 11/26. Also if I recall correctly from my time in college finals for the fall semester are in the first week or two of December ie right after the season. So when would this playoff be? Over Christmas after finals? Im sure that wouldnt be practical. If you lop off two or three games off the season to fit in a playoff before finals then the season will be over the first or second week of November. Also is it fair to take away two or three games, and revenue, from teams that know going into the season that they wont make the playoffs like Troy State etc?

Basketball is completely different. They can fit in two or three levels of playoffs over a week and it takes place basically over spring break.
