Don Pepin Garcia - Series JJ Maduro Belicosos

I am a little confused here ???

I thought "purging" was blowing through the cigar to push the smoke out of the lit end. Doing that seems to have a variety of effects on the burn, smoke quality, and taste/flavor. I was formerly a three-quarters of a pack cig smoker for over 30 years and do not believe that I ever blew through a cigarette to "purge" the smoke from it. I have never seen another cigarette smoker do that either. Further I have never unintentionally purged a cigar, other than perhaps laughing too hard at something in mid-puff.

Perhaps someone will define what is meant by "purging" in this thread. After all, some dieters think it means sticking a finger down your throat until you puke.

BTW, I absolutely agree that your paired beverages should be disclosed when reviewing.

Cheers,
antaean

Another BTW, nice review Turk!! I still need to try one of these as I am working my way through some of the Pepin products.

That's what purging is as it relates to cigar smoking.

I think the connection being made is that doing this will heat up the ember quite a bit causing the tobacco to burn faster, if only momentarily, changing the flavor profile of the cigar. Rebel Herfer will have to clarify exactly what he means, though. I've never seen a cigarette smoker do this, either.

When I refer to purging I am NOT referring to blowing out on the cigar; I am referring to Turks earlier description of puffing and lighting at the same time to superheat the cigar. Please don't confuse the cigarette issue and technique, it was an observation only. If your defnition of purging is different then this is good that we clear this up. :)

Oh, it's all becoming clearer now. :)

I thought Turk meant that he blew out through the cigar while resting the flame near the foot. This is the "burning off of impurities" that many refer to when discussing the purging process. I've found this to renew a cigar from time to time.

Puffing while holding flame to the foot would certainly cause the problems you have described and I could see that it would likely ruin any cigars subtleties, not to mention the tongue bite it would likely cause.

Understood!!!

Now I am less confused

I also agree with LB...

I need to re-read this whole darned thread.

Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, NOW I understand! Antaean, thank you so much for asking the crucial question. Boy, this thread points out just how critical agreement on terminology is to a reasoned discussion. LiLBastage is right on.

I totally agree that "purging" as you've described above is probably a bad thing. In fact, the only time I'm aware of doing anything even remotely like that is on the initial lighting.

OK, I think we're all good now, right? :D

This is what I do when purging a cigar lightly isn't doing it. Typically I ignite the offgasses from purging when a smoke is not going the way I want it to. Its my attempt to bring something out of the cigar that I like. I don't roast the coals, I just lightly torch the gasses that are blowing out the end of the foot. This will usually bring a sustainable flame that doesn't even require a constant light.

This is what us firefighters call offgassing. When something reaches its combustion point but doesn't have enough oxygen to ignite. Once these foul hot gasses exit the foot of the cigar, they reach open oxygen and ignite. Offgasses are highly flammable, but need the right combination of heat and o2 in order to light. Just purging a cigar doesn't bring enough temperature to the table to do this.

The only time I roast a foot during purging is when its getting foul and I should put it down. I've found that I can restore a smoke, if only for a few minutes, back to what it was, or when I'm through waiting for a cigar to show me something pleasant. Its a last resort, technique.

I do purge every cigar I smoke at some point. Sometimes many points, if its really yummy. I don't always purge hard or torch a smoke.

This cigar just sucked :)

I had one of these lastnight but the draw was a little tight on it. Nice smoke otherwise

Yes Brothers Wilkey, antean, & LB. My apology for not clarifying this earlier. I will try to be more complete in the future. I was just trying to enlighten a newer smoker to the perils of some bad habits. Oh well, I tried. I think I'm "good now."

No problems Brother.

No apologies necessary. :)

I think we all understand what was going on here a little better now. Sometimes this medium isn't the easiest method of communication.
