Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

So I did a google of CP, a straight Google and a Yahoo search for the vegas cubana. I got Outlaw D's profile and this thread. And a bunch of junk for

Vegas Robaina Cuban Cigars
La Gloria Cubana Cigars
and 5 Vegas

Can some one link me to a info site on the Pepin VC. I even looked for a DPG.com.....no luck.

Thanks

Secondly, this spurred me to smoke a Black Label Perla. I was pretty disappointed. I didn't like the Blue at all; something about my palette does not allow me to pick up the flavors the the Blue tobacco has so it's like smoking hot air. The Black has more flavor, but I didn't necessarily like the profile. It started off with tons of spice and low flavor then went into flavor with no spice. I was hoping that I'd like it enough for a box, but alas I do not. I'll take a L-200 over it any day of the week.

Blue and Black labels are simply different cigars. The Blues I smoke with a scotch before dinner. The Black with Porto after dinner. One is not better than the other. It's just a matter of timing.

Doc.

Doc - in your words, what would you say the difference is. I have only smoked one of each. My recollection was that the Blue seemed to be a bit sweeter with deeper flavors. The Black that I had last night was a bit more subtle... but still good to the nub.

I will be giving the Invictos another spin here soon.

I'm considering doing a head to head review. That is, smoke 'em both at the same time. Stay tuned.

Smoked my first Tat Cabinet this evening. I thought that it had a very similar flavor profile as the DPG Blue label. A little bit out of my price range though.

Edited to say... It was fuggin' good!!!!!!

Looking forward to this Doc.

I have not been on the forum for at least 3 months. I saw this thread and had forgotten about it.

Since I started this thread, I have become a hardcore Pepin whore in the past 8 months and I have killed the following:

4 boxes of DPG Blue's (Invicto)
1 box of DPG Blue's (Imperiales)
1 box of of Habana Leon's (Imperiales)
2 boxes of DPG Black's (Bellicosso)
7 Tatuaje Cojonu 2006
I smoke a DPG Series JJ every Friday at the B&M (5 months or so)

Obviously I smoke these bad boys daily. Hell on the weekends, I might smoke 2-4 Pepin's.

After reading the post, I have to agree with Devil Doc...."Blue and Black labels are simply different cigars."

For me, the Blue is more intense. Like Devil Doc, I will smoke the Blue when I'm drinking scotch or bourbon. For the Black, it is a smooth intensity. I smoke with the clear beverages....Takillya, Gin, or Rum...I've been smoking Blacks and Mojito's all summer.

The main Pepin I have not smoked is the 601. From what I see, there is a vast selection. Which one's do you like, and what do you like to stay away form?

Just smoked my first Black Label... man, what a nice cigar! I've been a Pepin addict for awhile, especially of the Blue Label. I need to smoke a few more to be sure, but after the first one, the black may be my favorite Pepin.

It is my favorite of his lines. I especially enjoy the perla size. Yummy little smoke!

I just got a 5er of Blacks from CI. I really liked it, but the ash was flaking all over me. I smoked them out of the UPS box though I'm hoping some time in my humidor will smooth that out. I'm kind of spoiled by the stubborn Padron ash.

Perhaps it just my palate, but I have been a bit dissapointed in the Pepin Cuban Classic.
I find is full bodied, but to the point of the smoke overiding the flavor.

I have a hard time putting it into words, but there you go.

Anyone else experience this or is it just my palate?

Since I originally contributed to this thread, my opinion about the DPG lines has changed a bit. More specifically, I have found the DPG blue a bit overwhelmingly powerful. I hate saying that because when I first starting smoking them I was always more than satisfied with this cigar. The last couple that I tried were harsh and poorly rolled (ie, too tight, hard to draw and had a horrible burn) :(

On the other hand, the last couple Cuban Classics (black) that I have had were wonderful. I hope my opinion about them doesn't change any because I ordered a box last week... ???

I have one of these in my humi right now waiting for me. I am really looking forward to it since I haven't had any Don Pepin Garcia line yet.

I smoked another black yesterday morning with a cup of Costa Rican coffee and damn it was good. I think these need to be smoked at a slightly higher humidity than usual though.

I have a box of blacks, fresh, i was very disappointed, poor draw, arid flavors....i gave them 4 months, and they have come around...one of my favs now. I keep them at 65% 64degrees, can't wait for a year on them.

Would you care to elaborate? I, for one, would like to know what experiences led you to this conclusion.

Well I may be way off, but I ordered a 5er and I smoked one as soon as I got the box from UPS. They were not individually wrapped either. When I smoked that first one, the ash was very flakey and kept dropping small bits on my shirt when I smoked it. Even good cigars that do this annoy the hell out of me. The burn was pretty inconsistant too. I put the other 4 in my humidor at about 65% RH and when I smoked the next one 5 days later, the ash was much more solid and the burn was better. It still flaked on me a bit, but nowhere near as bad.

hmm thats interesting because I keep all my pepin stuff with my isom's at ~60rh and they smoke great. I know tats have a delicate wrapper too so lower RH is preferred. I've also smoked through 2 boxes of black labels with none of the construction issues mentioned in this thread. Perhaps he is spreading himself too thin and some things are beginning to give.
