Growing too fast.
I wanted to have a quick smoke this evening after work, so grabbed one of these little Diplomaticos No. 5 (EMA SEP 07) and headed out the back door. The wrapper is a very light, golden brown, almost orange in color and quite smooth with no veins. The cigar is extremely hard around the band, as if a rock were inside the wrapper. I punched the cap and the cigar was completely plugged. I’m talking not one iota of a draw. Time to get out the draw tool!
I go ahead and torch the foot and draw as much as I can hoping maybe a little heat would help loosen the tobacco some. Wasn’t working. I went ahead and put the draw tool tip in the center of the punched cap and start twisting back and forth putting a small amount of pressure to force the tool in. I wrap my hand around the entire cigar and squeeze tightly while continuing to twist the tool further in. I think I’m going to make it all the way with no issues and then “pop”, there goes a crack near the foot.
I pull the tool out, twisting as I do, and test the draw. It’s only slightly better, so I use the tool a second time and push a bit further, probably hitting the ash. Once the tool is out a second time, I find that I can get smoke through much better. Still extremely tight though. The smoke has a very good flavor to it, medium body as far as I can tell with the minimum amount of smoke coming through. Toasty tobacco with a nice roasted nuttiness in the lasting finish. There’s also a clean taste, I would even go so far as to say soapy. It’s not too bad actually.
A good inch in and the draw is just not making it. I hit it one last time with the draw tool and it’s just not helping much. Giving myself a headache from trying to draw so much. Not to mention getting a fairly nasty metallic/paint thinner taste on the palate. I continue on and with maybe an inch and a half left, the draw opened up well enough to get smoke through, however at this point the smoke had taken on a dirty taste.
If the draw had been good, I have no doubt I would’ve really enjoyed this cigar. I’m hoping the others smoke better.
