Designing my own custom trays?

Hey everyone,

After reading the responses on my previous thread (in this subforum) and making some phone calls, I'm starting to think getting extra singles space will be more difficult then expected.

Ideally, I would want the tray to perfectly fit over pegs in my Antiem. But all the non-custom designed trays I've found won't reach that far. So I'm thinking about using Gorilla Glue/Humidor manufacturing glue to attach extra wood on each side expanding the width of the tray so it reaches the pegs.

What do you guys think? Anyone know what glue is used to manufacture humidors?

It's a bad idea cause of how untidy that glue is and how it expands so much when drying... gets EVERYWHERE. I've been building guitars for YEARS now and so I know my glues, heck... I keep several different types around for slightly different uses. I'd say use straight up titebond original. The bond is stronger than the wood itself, it's water based, perfect for this. Just apply the glue, and clamp together for an hour or more.

I edited my post... I will research this titebond glue. In the mean while, do you know what glue they usually use to build humidors?

Titebond is the shit. Clean up is easy just scrape off any extra with a razor or something of the like, if you use water to clean off your piece after gluing it will set into the grain and cause it to look stained.

John

P.S. post some pics when you're done.

Titebond whipped off with water will stain... I think not. Maybe not deeper than two passes of a 240 grit...
Titebond's pretty much the STANDARD in woodworking... there's three types... original is the best, if stuff's gunna get wet then use Titebond II... NEVER use TB III... I don't trust it farther than I can throw a car.

I assume the humidity in my humidor (even if it spikes to 80%) wouldn't be what is considered "wet" is it?

Tightbond, as said above is THE best general wood working glue out there. Sure there are epoxies and resins but for what you are looking to do Tightbond is perfect, it gives you plenty of working tme, cures quickly and very strong. Also clean up is a breeze, just wipe it up with a moist rag once you clamp and you are done, except for the final sanding.

Gorrilla glue is a nightmare for something like this, it will be a mess.

I have been using TB in my shop for about 12 years now and have never had a complaint. The origonal is fine for a humi, there is no worries with the humidity.

Is it just me or are those trays HUGE? Not to mention awesome if they're as big as I think they are hahah.

Mike, would you consider making or at least modifying trays for me instead? I'd be more than happy to pay :)

I like Titebond as well but I will defer to NullSmurf who knows a "little" about working with wood and glue... :whistling:

Very nice gentlemen. Thanks for sharing it gives me a few ideas for getting rid of the plastic trays I have.

You guys are right, they are a little bit LARGE, but I needed them. They are perfect for fitting max stogies in my frigidor. Dan I would love to help you out but right now I am extremely busy at work and burried in the shop with about six gun stock jobs, so it would be quite a while before I could do anything. But they are extremely easy to make, The Spanish cedar works like butter. Any "white" carpenters wood glue will work fine, Elmers is decent, but I really like the TB best.

Just to give you an idea of the size, there is just shy of a full box of Opus x Robusto in the center section of this tray, along with a couple xXx.
Then the one below is reserved for .....replica cigars that come from the cousin of one of the workers sisters friends brothers who only works weekends :whistling: .
The better part of a 50 cab or Boli PCs and some other sweeties, or simulated sweeties.

I have reorganized the Fuente tray some to get a few more sticks in there. I was just bombed by a good friend from CW last week and he just about put me over the edge, to fit any more cigars in the wine frige would require some KY and a rubber mallet.

Good luck.

I'm a woodworker and I use Titebond all the time. It's great glue but use it sparingly. A little goes a long ways. I like to use a small artist brush on my glue projects because its easy to apply and if your carefull you won't have a lot of run off.

Wow! Those are some beautiful pics! I appreciate you responding to my request and I completely understand - hey better to be busy with work then none at all eh? :)

One final question, where do I get good spanish ceder?

I did alot of searching and comparing when I started building my frigidor and internetlumber was the best price I could find. But there is a 5sqft minimum. That is not too much and a little extra is always nice to have around.

Spanish cedar

They were very generous as well, I got quite a bit more than I ordered, and it showed up very quickly.

See ya
