cutting a cigar

Hi all. Some help for a newbie needed here. Where should you cut a torpedo/pyramid cigar? How high/low from the point should you cut it. I seem to always cut either too close or too far and get either a too tight of a draw or too loose. I also have not seen a consistent cut from different tabacconists when I have them cut it for me. So, where do you all cut a torpedo?

My cut goes on a diaganol axis between the tip and 3/4 the way up to the shoulder. Provides maximum surface area for less tar build-up and allows the smoke to hit the roof of my mouth vice my tongue.

For me, it depends on the typical draw for that vitola/brand.

Some brands, such as Padron, tend to have an easier draw, so cutting approximately 1/4 - 3/8" off is usually plenty for my liking.
Something like a VSG Torpedo, which tends to have a slightly tighter draw, I'll cut a little more off the cap.

It's better to make the first cut conservatively, if you're not familiar with a cigar's draw. . .you can always cut more off, if needed.

i agree with puffnstuff. start small. if need be clip more. the idea behind torpedos and pyramids is to concentrate the smoke. so just experiment with each cigar line. youll learn pretty quick which ones need more cut and which ones dont.

i'm going to have try that.

i normally take about 1/4" - 1/3" off of mine

I agree with Puff start small you can always trim off more but the key is to experiment and keep on experiementing

Good old dick cut. Everytime I try this I mess it up. I have to agree with puff start small and cut again if needed

I always cut mine short also. My favorite being Padron's due to the great draw.

I agree, cut too little first, to be on the safe side. If you have a sharp cutter you should be able to cut more off.

As many have stated, depends on the stick. If you're having troubles such as this, i'ts best to just cut a little to be safe, then cut more if needed.

A stick on the dry side can be really nasty and crack open if you try to cut off a short piece

I don't like torpedos. I cut all my cigars with a punch EXCEPT torpedos where I use an inexpensive guillotine cutter and just lop off half the tip.

Treamayne made me wise to the diagonal cut for the torp's and pyramids like Emo said. Besides the smoke hitting the roof of your mouth it is a more aethetically pleasing cut to make the diagonal cut on this type of cigar. The one thing I have found helpful is to have the cut begin at the end closer to the foot and head toward the pointed tip. Then there is less chance of the wrapper binding in any way while you are making the cut.

It doesn't make the tobacco better, doesn't do anything all that measurable but it does somehow adds to the art of cigar smoking. It just seems like the right kind of cut to me. And really isn't that all that matters---what I think.

At first I thought this wouldn't work but it actually does, just make sure you put it in your mouth the same way everytime.
