Cutters, Punches,and Notches . . .

Alright- I know that it is mostly preferance. I have only used a cheap "Klip-it" or basic punch. I like a big draw, and that's why I prefer the standard cutter.

Here's the question- what is you preferance and why?
 
The Swiss "Cigar Punch" knife that I picked up on a tip from Kingantz works great. I smoke quite a few Sancho Panza Quixote's and the punch helps keep the cap from unraveling.
 
Punch works best for me. I've tried using a cutter to slit around the cap and has worked a few times okay, however have had several instances where I ruined the cap doing it that way.

This has been discussed before but I will answer anyway...

I have used them all, at first I prefered a punch because of the clean, round feel on the lips, but this cut has a tendency to build up tar and crack the head. Never cared for the V cut, used a double guillotine for a while but it had a tendency to rip the cap, so I now use the score and lift technique. This is great because it gives a full opening without leaving jagged edges. It also can be done with a 99 cent cutter, a pocket knife or a razor blade. Thanks Wilkey. ;)

I realize that this and almost EVERYTHING has been discussed in previous forums. I can find this at LINKY. But what's the fun in that. . .

...I think BBS was suggesting the forum's search, not Google.... It's in the button rack near the top of the page.
 
I use a verity of methods, usually my Xikar cutter cutting just enough to remove the cap, but for some cigars I have found a punch to be more effective for the draw. I guess its all about personal preference.
I only have a small Gauge punch so I have to punch a couple of times for the bigger cigars.

Indeed I was. If you search this forum, you'll find the question of cutter vs. punch and why has been discussed, debated, debunked, and analyzed many times. The point with suggesting a search is that if you look, the answers already exist.

I used to use an cheap guillotine cutter (every time I used it I helds my breath.), until I saw someone here post a few picks of a cigar on which he had used a swiss army punch/knife. I found one on amazon marketplace cheap enough to give a try.
What a perfect punch every time, and as added bonus a choice of 3 different sizes. And last I have a cuban crafters sissors still in the box. One of these days I'll give it a try.(when I can't find my swiss army punch.)
 
Got the whole search thing. What I was saying is that any information I am looking for I could find online. If I was going to just search everything and not get advice from say, new people to the forum that did not post in the previous forum(s), or people's opinion's change, or they try something different.

How many reviews have been done on the beloved Opus. . . just asking a question, that's all.

That's takes the fun out of it. It's always nice to start a thread weather it's been discussed before or not and see how everyone gives there opinions. Give the newbie a break and stop being anal ;)

My preference is a cutter. I just prefer the fuller, very easy flowing, draw from a cigar cut with a cutter.
Infact, I'm one of those weirdos who didn't like the recommended punch cut on the LFD Chisel, I ended up hacking the tip off after a few puffs.


As for the third cutter, well... only women use notch cutters.

I think for the punch to perfect for all smokes then you would need a "swiss army" edition with abunch of sizes.
 
The punch sizes on the Swiss Army Knife - punch are 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", also has several knife blades, scissors, ect. very well made.

i here ya i didnt like the punch on the chisel either i find the stright cut to be much better. I Like the V cut in some figurados. Most of the time i like a stright cut from an Xilar.

Dont worrie about how some of the guys hear jump on your back from the get go. They have good intentions, and are trying to keep this place running right. Just take their advise
