CP OUTTAKES

The Beast talks a little with Horse about whatelse?...Horses and singing. :D

"I was in my late teens then and didn't make time for anything but girls and horses."

TheBeast:  Well let me cut to the chase...What's your back ground with horses?

Horse:  Why did I know that was coming outta the chute first?  When I was about 9 my brother and I each got for Christmas 6 riding lessons and it never quit.  Bought our first horse about a year and a half later and spent the next 15 or so years training and showing horses...both English jumping and Western.  I've pretty much done it all except for racing and cutting.

TheBeast:  What is cutting?

Horse:  You're given a small herd of cattle, you 'cut' one of your choice out of the herd.  Then do your best, without reining the horse...strictly leg signals and the horses own instinct... to keep the calf from rejoining the herd.

TheBeast:  Interesting.

TheBeast:  Can you rope cattle from a horse?

Horse:  I could train a horse to do this, but the entry fees alone for the contests are a killer.  $600 and up to enter into a contest.  That's why so many 'celebrities' get into it.  It's a pretty expensive sport.   And yes, I can calf rope.

TheBeast:  Well I guess it's safe to say you're a "modern day" cowboy...huh?

Horse:  "modern day" singin' cowboy.

TheBeast:  Have you done any rodeo riding?

Horse:  Some, when I was in high school.  Rode bareback, and gave it a shot at bulls.  Never was very good at the bull-ridin.  38" inseam, I was all legs..still am.  Anyway, I couldn't score very well cause I look funny on a Bull.  But bareback was pretty cool, long legs rakin' the spurs helped in the scoring.

TheBeast:  Well you've never trained horses for racing...are you a racing fan?

Horse:  Never have trained for racing.  But yes, I love to watch the ponies run.  I'm in a regular group, mostly from CF that get together each Friday evening at a local smoke shop.  We thought it would be cool to go to the local track and watch the ponies and smoke a bit...we meet last friday.  I have a regular routine...watch the horses come into the paddock, saddle up, then walk around the paddock once before going out to the track.....  Anyway, I pick my horse out in the paddock based on how long the race is... then place my bet on the way back out to the track.  Then watch them race..then back out again

TheBeast:  Are you a gambling man also...bet a bit on those ponies?

Horse:  Never bet more than $2...and Always bet to 'Show'.

TheBeast:  You're a smart man.

Horse:  And a poor one

TheBeast:  When did you get into smoking cigars?

Horse:  Hmmm, probably about 4 years ago.  Smoked ALL the dog-rockets, unknowingly, at the time

TheBeast:  When were you introduced to the good stuff?

Horse:  Whenever my join date was here at CP

TheBeast:  LOL

TheBeast:  Here is a submitted question from Emo...Who is your hero/idol...and why?

Horse:  My dad.  And I don't say that because of the answers given on the sports hero's thread.  The guy grew up in a broken family.  Took care of his little brother and sister, was an Eagle scout, ran a scout troop very early, went to College and worked 40 hours a week... All this did lead to becoming a 'workaholic' but the guy never quit....till he passed out one day at work.  This was about 10 years…

TheBeast:  He sounds like a great man.

Horse: …ago when he was the national facilities director for Sprint... He was making $million decisions daily for them when they were building the fiber network, but would have to walk the contractors bills thru for signatures...anyway, this nerves finally gave out..they thought it was a heart attack but thank God, it was just nerves... He's retired and hits the office, all 18 holes M-F now outside of San Antonio.

TheBeast:  Much deserved I'm sure.

TheBeast:  I'm smoking a Vegas Robaina...what do think about these?

Horse:  I had one last Tuesday after chorus rehearsal.  Loved it.

TheBeast:  So what do you do for a living?

Horse:  I run 4 computer labs in the library at...ahem...it's a long one.... University of North Texas Health Science Center... that's a mouthful.  It's an Osteopathic Medical school.  I'm an open-door helpdesk for all the students, phone support for software used on campus, and teach computer apps to the staff and any students that want to take the classes.  We offer monthly Beginning, intermediate and
advanced Microsoft ..whatever.. classes, e-mail..groupwise, and a few others.

TheBeast:  Do you have a dream job…or is that it?

Horse:  No this isn't it.  Working for the state pays on average 33% below market.  But it's a nice laid-back kinda place to be.   I was born to be working with horses.  But I don't have the capital to do it.  Eventually, I'll do it again as a side-line.

TheBeast:  Do you participate in any other online cigar forums?

Horse:  I do hit CF daily.  Matter of fact, had the 'Around the World' pass in my possession over the weekend.  But if you check my profile over there, it'll tell ya to look for me over here.

TheBeast:  Did you start your own pass or get in a few when you first came to CP?

Horse:  I got into several before starting my own.  I didn't have the stock to start my own really till after the first of this year.  Worked a side job when the Stock Show and Rodeo was in town.

TheBeast:  How long have you been doing the Barber Shop thing?

Horse:  3 years and I wish I had been doing it for a lot longer.

TheBeast:  How did you get involved?

Horse:  LOL, my mom told me about the local chapter one day when I was feeling miserable.  She had been involved with the Sweet Adeline's (female barbershop) out in Santa Fe when they lived out there.

TheBeast:  When was your first experience singing?

Horse:  I can remember back to when we went to Philmont..the national boyscout jamboree, and singing as a youngster out there.  Was in a kids church chorus, then when the horses came...well, I didn't make time for nothing but horses. My brother though was in the Texas Boys Choir, which has always been compared with the Vienna Boys Choir.  I was in my late teens then and didn't make time for anything but girls
and horses.

TheBeast:  Ok...give me three words that describe the man we call "horse"?

Horse:  Principled, equestrian, Dad

TheBeast:  You do seem a man of principle...how many kids are you dad to?

Horse:  TY, and there's 2 of mine…16 year old boy/girl twins, 3 of hers...but I guess I'm dad to 2, a 17 year old girl and 10 year old boy.  There will not be OURS btw. Took care of that part years ago.

TheBeast:   Ok...sounds like a lot of work?

Horse:  LOL, sometimes.  I only get to have my kids every other weekend.  Donna's daughter just graduated high school and has been seeing a very nice young man from another chorus for about a year now, and the 10 year old splits his time about 70/30 with us and his dad.
So, sometimes, it's crowded and sometimes we get the place to ourselves.

TheBeast:  Having the place to yourselves must be nice?

Horse:  Very!

TheBeast:  Give me your Top 5 favorite cigars?

Horse:  AF Hemmingway Signature Maduro, Bolivar Inmensa, Bolivar Corona Gigantes, El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme, AF Anejo Shark .....Now mind you, that's just so far.  I've got a few at home that I have not tried yet...namely the other maduro Hemmingways..the classic, untold story and the masterpiece.  And I've got a ways to go till I've tried all the isoms that I want to try.

TheBeast:  AF Anejo Shark? Yum!!!

Horse:  Yup... I've only had one, but loved it after the first 6 puffs or so.

TheBeast:  How many cigars do you presently have in the humidor?

Horse:  I'd say about 250.

TheBeast:  What storage units do you have?

Horse:  Kenny brought up a commercial under-the-counter rolling fridge.  His wife wanted him to put it on curbside for the garbage to collect.  So he loaded it up and brought it.     No, it's not plugged in.  Anyway, i ran a small fan, similar to a puter fan under it and into the fridge.  Put it on a timer to blow about 5 minutes every 30 minutes or so.  Then went to a local tobacconist, bought (and still do every couple weeks) empty cigar boxes, including Don Carlos and Hemmingway boxes for $1 apiece.  Fill them from the tuppordors and put them in the fridgador.  Kenny is THE MAN.  I'm gonna owe him for quite a while on that one.

TheBeast:  Sounds like a pretty tight setup.

Horse:  I like it.  The mare thinks that someday, she'll get to set up the fridgador as a soda/beer fridge.  Lots-o-Luck.  It ain't gonna happen.

TheBeast:  LOL .  What celebrity do you most relate to?

Horse:  Never thought about that one.  But the first one that comes to mind is Tommy Lee Jones.  Comes from a ranch (I used to watch him play polo when he played for the San Antonio team and came to play against Dallas) and his work ethic is unparalleled (sp?) Do it right.

TheBeast:  Well your a Dad, a singing cowboy, and a cigar smoker...any other hobbies or interests?

Horse:  I did have aspirations of playing baseball…I was quite good at it and can still throw about 93mph...but the semester I started junior college, they dropped the baseball program.  I just hung my head and didn't do anything about it.  Regretted it ever since.  If you would like, I can get up on quite a tall soapbox and tell you about what's happened to the pitching since the invention of video games.

TheBeast:  No, that's ok...I'm not much a baseball fan...but it's pretty obvious that it sucks.

Horse:  Thanks, cause when I get into it, I'm usually pissed till I can have a drink and a smoke...that'll be another 4 1/2 hours.

TheBeast:  LOL.  How many people have you met personally from cigar forums?  And how often due you smoke with them?

Horse:  From our forum..um..3..Allofus, PB, Double Gun…who has since moved to California and will join us again as soon as the shock of an $1100 one bedroom apt. wears off.  On CF, about a dozen of us...if everyone shows...meet once a week.

TheBeast:  That is so cool...good for you.

Horse:  I'm trying to get a few from the chorus to participate but can't seem to get them to commit.  I'm pretty sure that once they get into it, they'll get hooked.

TheBeast: I'm Sure.  Well that's about it...do youhave anything to add...or a question you wished I would have asked?

Horse:  Naw.  I gotta get ready for a class I'll be teaching within the hour.  Thanks though, it's been a blast.

TheBeast: Thankyou.

Alright everyone - it appears I've been temporarily put in charge of this extravaganza.....

So my questions to all of you are

1: Who would you like to see interviewed? (TheBeast has reserved some members to be interviewed by him, otherwise it's whoever I want)

PM me your responses and I'll try and take care of ya!

Dave ;)

Hello Guys/gals,

I haven't been around much lately due to job constraints, however, I just read the interview with Horse. Great job! What better way to get to know folks, especially if ya can't get out an meet them personally.
