Our Winner is Stephen (Fivebyfiffy).

I've finally come up with out next contest. Part of the purpose of a pass is to have fun in the pass thread and get to know each other better. We've been kind of quiet so here is the next contest to get us talking.

Contest for all pass participants.

Tell us what your screen name means and any story behind how you got it, or came up with it. Also tell us your real first name so we're more on a first name basis.

Be creative, funny, include pictures, whatever. I'll narrow the entries to two that I like and have the professors pick the winner. If a professor is in the final two I'll randomly choose a pass participant to help choose the winner.

Contest will close on Feb 7.

Winner gets a fiver.

I'll start. I'm the most uncreative, unartistic person that exists. I can't draw a stick figure. I sat and actually thought of a screen name for a couple of days and the best I could come up with is my name. Is that pathetic or what? :(

Of course once I was on the board and started seeing everyones Avatar, and signatures, it inspired me to show my love of Batman (not the TV series, or movies. Comic books only). He is the best superhero and we can openly debate this if you like. Now I wish I had made my screen name Batman. Maybe I'll have to see if Rod will change it.

im leaving tuesday night but you can send it one of the guys at work will put it in the office fridgadoor

Coming up with a screen name was not easy for me either. In fact, it delayed my joining CP for a week or two. I am not the most creative or artistic guy in the world. In fact, I have trouble drawing a straight line with a ruler. After kicking a few names around I finally came up with what I am (besides an almost old fart). I am a baby boomer, vintage 52 (year of birth). So there it is, Boomer52. Still not real happy with it but it works.

Wow...it's been a while since I thought back on all of this. I have used my screen name as my handle since well before the Internet was anything like it is today. Revealing the roots of a handle is always strange to me.
I was a kid in New York during the heyday of graffiti there from the 70's into the 80's when graffiti artist gods like Seen, Mad, Lee, Blade, and Quik (to name a few) "bombed" walls and subway cars from top to bottom and end to end in beautiful murals. I remember seeing these incredible pieces of art in and around Manhattan and I was always blown away by them. I remember loving them from as early as I can remember. They were stunning, bold, intricate, and, perhaps most significantly, temporary as they were constantly scrubbed off or painted over. All of that effort for something of such impermanence struck me as a true labor of love.

Anyway, I was never much of an artist although I did a little tagging here and there in my ne'r-do-well youth. When I moved to Minneapolis in '91 and continued my mostly small-scale and sporadic tagging, I took the tag of Sin, (the original Sin [hahahaha – Original Sin] was another east coast artist), but I added the NYC for several reasons. One, to delineate my New York roots; two, to differentiate my tag from the older Sin's tag; and three, to incorporate the pun that the combination of Sin and NYC (SinNYC) creates on the word cynic, which suits my disposition well, into my tags and eventually my online name.

So, there's the etymology of my handle: SinNYC = sinnyc = cynic

I've never been the artistic type. I can't draw a good stick figure let alone create something beautiful with a brush. I've used SportsDLS as my handle for as long as I can remember on the net. I'm pretty young (22) so I made it when I was probably 10-12. I've always loved sports, watching them and playing them. As for the DLS, those are my initials, Dustin Lee Scott.
Pretty simple but thats where it came from.

Yardgnome has been my nickname since high school, me and a few friends in high school used to like to go around at night and "Liberate" yardgnome's from neighborhood yards and they always seemed to end up at my house. 02 is the year I graduated high school and enlisted in the Navy, I tack it on the end whenever yardgnome is already in use.

Whew that's good. I was hoping that it was not some weird fetish.

Hey now, I kept asking you for contest ideas. So this is what you get. Remember I'm not creative.

Hey there, my real name is Joss Badger and since everyone seems to be talking about their artistry skills I'll add that I draw stick figures disproportionately. Don't ask me how it happens but when I'm done they just are.

On to the screen name. I actually have had only 2 screen names my entire internet life besides the "family" screen name when we first got the internet when I was a kid. The first one was EvilSmiley which came from bastardizing my mother's hippy roots. Back in the day of joints and acoustic guitars she was simply called sunshine by everyone and her trademark was an oversized smiley face patch :) sewn on to a dirty hippie jean jacket. Being of a slightly darker mindset than most and having been called evil more than once (and I was only about 10-11 at this point!) I spawned my first screen name.

When I turned 16 I got into medieval live action combat games (some of you may know about the SCA or Amtgard) and when you play those, you don't go by your real name, you pick a persona name. I chose Septumus for a number of reasons. First off Septumus means 7 or 7th in Latin. The number 7 has appeared numerous times in my life from the hour I was born to the day I was born to the day I met my current girlfriend and spawned the best and most steady relationship of my life. The list goes on as well. Also my name, Joss, roughly translates into Luck. Well 7 is the generic lucky number right? Hence I am Septumus, the seventh. This persona name slowly but surely became my internet name as well.

My name is Mike Sierra, ... well it didn't take me long to come up with mine.

I have a Tatuaje on my back of my initials MAS, in spanish mas means 'more' and since I love a gar or two I figured MAS_Puros.

The Garvey handle is one I've used since the early 1990s when I first discovered the beauty of the internet. At the time I was in graduate school at Indiana University and taking my first courses in Early American Public Address. I developed a fascination with the abolitionist movement and, ultimately, the black nationalist movement of the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.

My first major research project focused on Marcus Garvey and his relationship to other African-American leaders like WEB Dubois and Booker T. Washington. The project was consuming so much of my time that a group of my friends literally dragged my out of my apartment and took me to a house party at some mutual friends. Well, several shots of tequilla later -- combined with beers and god knows what else -- I was absolutely wrecked. Wrecked to the point of stripping into my boxers and climbing into one of the empty beds upstairs. :0 All was cool until....

About 60 minutes later I ran down the stairs in only my boxer shorts yelling "Marcus Garvey! Marcus Garvey! Marcus Garvey!" and sat down at a computer and started typing. Now realize, I remember none of this. Apparently I was talking jibberish about some great idea I had for my project and my friends let me type for about 15 minutes before they put me back to bed to sleep it off.

When I awoke late the next morning there was a piece of paper next to my clothes -- a printout of my great idea for my project -- and a handwritten note that said "Hey Garvey, absolutely brilliant!" And on that paper? Random keystrokes that a gorilla could have put together. It took a few hours to recreate the evening -- an evening that I never lived down -- and "Garvey" became a grad school name that stuck.... And I've used it online ever since.

As an fyi, this is the REAL Garvey that inspired the name....

lol Garvey that is funny

My name is Ted Yancy. I have an Olde English Bulldog and his name is, you guessed it, Dozer. He's not like the standard AKC bulldogs that are real low to the ground. He's taller at the shoulders and his snout is not as smushed, so he won't keel over and die in the Houston heat. He actually resembles a Boxer on steroids rather than a bulldog. I call him Dozerhead a lot because, well, he's got one big fat noggin! Plus, friends are always telling me that I have a big head, too! So, I guess the name kind of fits. He's a pretty good dog. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, though. I'll use his pic as my avatar oneday if I can ever figure out how to do that. Maybe I'm not tha smart, either? ???

Oops! I just read KiethS post about it being for Pass participants only. Sorry! Please disregard my previous post. I guess I just got overzealous.
