CP’s “Cigar 101 ” Newbie Pass 2

I really would like to see a lot of chatter/smack talk ( on a good note...no meltdowns or outright craziness) and there will be more contests to follow.

The best smack I can say right now... You deserved a swift kick in the shorts for taking the H. Upmann that I wanted to try. But then I saw your puts and decided to withdraw the application of my foot to your backside.

(Weak, I know, but its the best I have at this point.)

It's funny how you can always have your "virtual" p's & t's, wait until you have said box in your hands and your faced with a butt load of cigars. That's when the fun begins. I don't think there has ever been a pass that I've been in that I actually stuck with the sticks I thought I wanted.

Since I'm 13th on the list I expect a whole new lineup of cigars. That's what makes it fun. Picking what you would like to try and then having to pick different ones when someone else grabs them. Seeing what others like and want to try and if their tastes are similar to yours. Wondering what will be in the box when it gets to you.

I look forward to getting to know you guys (gals?) better.

Anyone up for reviewing one of your "takes"? Was it what you were expecting and did you like it?

I've tried not to start thinking about what I will take or put at this point, being 8th I may have a whole new line-up to chose from. Thats one of my favorite parts of this I think, watching the line-up develop as I wait. I'm still really new to smoking quality cigars but I will be happy to try my hand at reviewing and post a review of one of these fine sticks after making my p/t's.

BTW....More went out that I didn't put down...
#36 LfD A ($15 or so)
#37 Al's custom Padilla ( I don't remember...ask Al)
#38 LfD Cameroom Lancero (One's not enough for this pass....)
#39 CAO Anaconda OR...not the new one....($8ish)
#40 Nuevitas Jibaro #2 ($4-5 dollar cigar from Pete...before the Tatuaje line existed...or some smack like that)
#41 Gurkha X Fuerte Torpedo

:sign:

One more thing....I put a host bag in there...but I really prefer it to remain unopened and you all are free to start another if you like.

I'm sure once you see it, you'll understand how rare the contents are and I'm afraid that disturbing it will have an effect on Keith's ability to enjoy it.

Thanks for understanding....
-Rob

Would also be a good idea to have a look at the profile of the botl after you in the pass ... throw in one of two that they like.

Jeesh Rob. That's alot of puts. Thanks. The professor has schooled the newbs. What could be in that bag?

Sure is quiet out there. Everyone figuring out their puts and takes?

Nah, I'm not even thinking about the takes since I am way near the end. No use worrying about that yet as the box will have changed significantly by the time it gets to my neck of the woods. But I am interested to see how it changes as it moves along.

I'm looking at my takes/puts and trying to identify value for value and have one question for clarification (and for my own peace of mind and clarification for others):

Should values given to all cigars be MSRP or should value be Market Value? I know syllabus says MSRP but when using CigarCyclopedia value calculations we would shift to an average of market value. I've looked at Famous Smoke Shop and their pricing identifies their price and MSRP.

Then there are the prices I would pay here locally which would dramatically skew everything up in price (can you say "gouge"?) :p

Thanks for the help! I'm looking forward to receiving the package!!!!

I "think" (and correct me if I'm wrong professors) that for hard to get cigars such as Opus or Anejo, you are to use MSRP only, because there is so much gouging out there. For normal sticks you look at the sales price at two to three online stores and use an average.

For example you could use MSRP, Famous Smoke Shop, and CI. Average the three prices and you have a fair value.

I just received the pass from IndyRob & took a look to see if all is well with the contents. Inventory is complete, but the #7 cigar (Patel Edge) is cracking at the foot. Just an fyi....

And Rob's gift to KeithS is indeed special. I'm glad Rob told us to keep it sealed, otherwise I would have fallen to temptation to savor the gift -- even if I couldn't have it. I'll start a separate gift bag for our host!

Stay tuned for puts/takes. Probably on Sunday evening.

I took all the cigars to bed with me on the night that the box arrived. I tried to be careful with every single stick, but sometimes things get a little out of control...

Sorry about that :sign:

MENTAL NOTE: Open all boxes with latex gloves & inspect inside bags for "excess fluid"

garvey: If you can get the box shipped on Monday, I'll be in good shape for getting it back out on time. I will be leaving for 2 nights the following week though. So I need to ask that the box arrive sooner rather than later. Let me know when it ships so I can keep an eye open for it.

Cheers,
Chris

OK, I think I'm getting my takes down -- but one question: What is the value of the Custom Padilla rolled by Al? Any ideas?

Here are my tentatives, so I can get a sense if I'm in the ballpark:

Take: Cohiba XV 550
Put: Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta Robusto

Take: Don Pepin Cuban Classic (Black) Petit Lancero 1977
Put: RyJ Cedro Deluxe #1

Take: Rocky Patel Edge Maduro Torpedo Factory Second
Put: Fuente Hemingway Short Story

Take: LFD Outlaw 2007 Bad to the Bone Event Stick
Put: Graycliff Blue Label Professionale

Take: LFD DL-700 Maduro
Put: Tatuaje Nobeles

I'm also adding to the pot the following (one may be used for Al's Custom Padilla):

Fuente 858 Maduro
Fuente 858 Natural
RyJ Habana Reserva Robusto
Rocky Patel Sun Grown Robusto
CAO Maduro Robusto
CAO Gold Robusto

Let me know your thoughts....

Chris --

Monday is MLK Day, so no Postal Service. I'll send it out on Tuesday!!!!

You need to list the number of the take next to the take you are taking (did I use the word take enough). This is so that there is no confusion as to what you are taking.

Then you need to list the number for your potential puts, starting with where they left off from the last person in the pass. So for instance your first entry should look like this.

Take #3 Cohiba XV 550
Put #42 Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta Robusto

Then you write this number on the bag of the cigar you are putting in. Any extras you put that are for the pass you would also assign a number.

You can edit your first post. I'll get busy approving you.

Keith
