I've looked around the internet for a while trying to garner any info on conceal carry weapons. i bought a beretta 9000s which I love but I'm looking for something a little smaller to fit in a front pocket of a pair of khaki's or shorts. Looked at Kel Tec's and am thinking about getting one but I thought I'd go straight to the 'source' for any real advice. you guys haven't let me down yet.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

thanks for any input

A Hungarian PA-63 and a Russian Makarov are both 9 x 18, inexpensive and reliable. They both have some character, the PA-63 was carried in a couple James Bond movies and looks just like a Walther, and the Makarov is just a good looking, good feeling gun. They may be slightly bigger than you want.

I can send pictures of both if you wish.

I will think about some more choices.

AMT Backup II. 6 shots, full stainless and the size you are looking for. Buy one used for cheap.

My main carry piece is a full-size 1911 in .45 ACP...a Kimber Classic Stainless, to be exact. But it sounds like you want something smaller.

I also have a Kahr PM9 for those days my mode of dress won't allow the Kimber. It's extremely light, flat, and small...almost palm sized, even in my smallish hands. Double action only, with a long, smooth trigger pull.

The PM series also includes a .40 caliber model and a brand new .45 version to be released this summer. I'm lookin' hard at that one.

Just my curiousity (and I'm not anti-gun), but why carry a gun?

I carry a Glock 26 in the hip pocket of my jeans. 9mm, 10+1 Double stack. Nice small frame.

I'm sure there is a single stack out there that is a little narrower, but I'm just partial to Glocks and I like the fatter grip.

Have you thought about a snub-nose .38 revolver? My grandpa carried one in his front pocket for years. Pretty safe for pocket carry and a potent enough round, especially in +P configurations.

I've got a 26 as well and it's a dandy. Mine has Meprolight sights and the OEM 5lb connector. It shoots amazingly well for a teeny gun, and has been completely reliable. Easy to recommend....

A Glock 26 is a great gun, I love mine. It has a laser sight so if I really needed defense that's what I'd carry. However a Glock can have it's bad sides for a concealed carry. 1.......Cost is up there and 2..........you need to work with and and practice in a harried defense situation due to it's safety mechanism, or lack thereof.

A couple things I would look for.....size is your preference:
1. Double action with a hammer block so you can carry it with a round chambered and won't shoot yourself
2. A single (right thumb) safety so you don't get caught looking at the gun instead of your attacker.

Good thread. My carry weapon is a Springfield XD .40 cal SUB-Compact. It is excellent, small, still holds 10 rounds and has better safety features than the Glock (but still doesn't have a manual safety). Runs about 5 bills.

True of any gun for sure.

Anybody who carries has the responsibility to know his gun intimately and how it operates. Much has been said about the Glocks and their safety mechanisms over the years. The Glock mechanism is exactly the reason I carry it. In a critical situation, I don't want to worry about my weapon or it's current state of operation. I understand the trigger safety and how the firing pin block works. I also know the only thing I have to do is pull the trigger if the time comes.

I know all the gun's pro's and con's, but for personal defense, I wouldn't rely on anything else.

You know that all you need is a two shot Derringer if self protection is all you are looking for. If you can't hit them in 2 shots you won't with 10 either.

Sometimes, bad things happen to good people...and it isn't always "in the bad part of town." I carry insurance on my truck and my home...just in case. I carry first aid and other emergency kit in my truck...just in case. I keep several fire extinguishers in my home, just in case. And...I carry a firearm for personal protection...just in case. I'd be quite glad to live my life without having an immediate need of any of these things...and maybe I will, if providence is kind. But if I ever do need a gun, chances are, I'm really gonna need it.

You've obviously never had to fire a gun in self defense. :whistling:

IIRC, 2.5 shots are fired during the average self defense scenario at a distance of 21 feet. That leaves you about half-a-shot short.

Edit to add: I actually like the Bond derringer a lot --- .45 Colt and/or .410 gauge...now that's a whole handful of fun!

Sarcasm doesn't come across well so in case you weren't kidding you might want to at least look at my profile before you say something like that.
