Cinco de Mayo - Who Cares?

I do agree w/ Roberto that Qualls point could have been made w/out the racial jab.

I agree, but sarcasam is hard to do while typing, I'm quite sure Qualls meant nothing insulting by it.

It's been handled, we're having dinner tonight at his place

That was a quick reach around

Don't be jealous, you're the one who quit me remember :p

ROTFLMAO!!

And on topic, I just got invited to a Cinco de Mayo party at the local NCO club on friday, sounds like fun, going to take the wife and kids, there is going to be a Mariachi band too. I think my kids will have a blast.

OK, why?

Cinco de........... WHO GIVES A CRAP

I DO

The question goes back to what I first said. I don't care about Bastille Day, Guy Fawkes Day, Red Army Day, or St. Patricks Day either, why should I care about this? It is mostly the folks on this side of the border who celebrate and not the Mexicans themselves. Not what one would expect.

......does it really hurt you to celebrate Mexican culture once a year?

Why do I care about the holiday?

For a few reasons. My grandparents are from Mexico, and came here when they were young. My grandfather's side of the family is from Puebla. As a young boy, I lived with them and they shared with me the meaning of Cinco de Mayo as well as a lot of other things about our culture. They taught me to be proud of our culture, and to celebrate the struggles, favorable or not, and not use these days just as an excuse to party. Being a Mexican American, I celebrate most Mexican holidays and historic events. Just as I know and celebrate our country's history and signifigance of our holidays.

I would definitely say Cinco de Mayo is more of a border state thing. Living in one of the biggest Hispanic corridors in the U.S., Hispanic culture and tradition are a part of everyone's lives here. It is kind of like the St. Pats thing up North.

I love Cinco de Mayo.

My wife is Mexican-American as are our 2 kids (they are half mutt, as well, just like me). For me, it's an opportunity to celebrate the culture of her family, with her family. It's just a good time to eat, drink and be merry with family!

Why should I care about May 5th? Cause my wife would kick my A$$ if I didn't!!

That's the day I allowed her to marry me!

That is a way cool thing  , but it's a cultural thing. You are celebrating the true meaning.

American marketers have perversed it and is ram-rodding it down the throats like that of halloween, mothers day, secretary's day, valentine's, grandparents day, hey, we should have Cigar Day, etc. It's not about the holiday itself, it's about getting people to separate their $$ from their wallets. I would bet that many promoters of the Cinco de Mayo festivities have no clue what the holiday is supposed to be about.

As I said in my previous post, many Americans are like sheep who are easily led.
