Cigar smell.

Hi guys, I have a question for you all.

I've been smoking cigars for a year or so now, and just landed a job that I'm really excited about: working in a cigar shop. Unfortunately, I've run into a problem. My parents (I'm 19) have voiced strong opposition to the fact that I come home smelling of cigar smoke after work, as the shop has a smoking lounge. Perhaps "strong opposition" is a bit of an understatement. I assume you gentlemen get my point, though.

My question is this: What can I do to circumvent this problem? How can I avoid my parents having their senses offended by the smell of cigar smoke? Even the slightest bit can put them on edge. Before the option of quitting the job arises, I'll go ahead and say that it isn't much of an option. The pay is excellent, the hours are great, and I really do need the job in order to pay for school.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Try "introducing yourself" to your parents first..........

Go to the strip club after work. The stench of whores and whiskey will make your folks forget about the minor cigar smoke issue.

Do they know you smoke? If not, break that to them.

Then, show them financially why you need the job for school. As long as it doesn't impede your ability to further your education and it isn't turning you into a drug dealing child rapist, they should be happy their son is doing something with himself.

Lastly, if non of that works, politely ask them to respect your decision as an adult. Eventually they will come around. Youd be surprised at what parents tolerate.

wait... smoke smell is bad?

Dammit... now I may actually have to clean out my truck

HAHA! just kidding... it's truck. Why clean it?

In other more serious news... change your clothes? You should always have a throw down change of cloths for the 'just in case' moment :whistling:

I worked at a sugar factory in Idaho after high school. You wanna talk about stench . . . hooo, buddy. My folks made me undress on the back porch and put everything straight into the washer before I came in the house after a shift.

So, uhhh, tell 'em it could be worse. A lot worse!

What the Hell Jon? I'm usually the one with the niceies to the newbs. You getting soft?
This guy needs to follow protocol. You getting soft?

I don't know Matt, all that time with Swissy has made me tender in more places than I care to admit.

I have a friend who manages a retail seafood market. You can introduce him to your folks. They will never again complain of you smelling like cigars. (If you really want to punish them you can force them to go for a ride in his car!)

I know people on the other end of that industry out on the boats. Spend 55 days on a Russian boat with no fresh water and no shower trawling for fish and see how they like that smell. I could send you my rain gear form the summer. I'm sure the fish guts would over power the smoke smell. I think you could merge two of the previous ideas and have a shower with whores and whiskey as well, might not change the smell but I bet it would be fun.

Really, change clothes and there have been numerous questions of dealing with the breath issue. I'm not going to search them as that is 1) not good use of my time and 2) something you need to learn to do anyway. I say this because if you have smoked they will get that smell in your breath as well. So, shower, change clothes, and wash your mouth out should easy the problem.

So I assume they'd rather you work at a fast food place, smelling like burgers/grease all day?

It's a job, tell them to get over it.

Tell them that's the smell of an honest living that's helping pay for your education. Tell them you are lucky to have a good job that pays well.

OK, I suppose to some extent, it's their house, their rules. But really, you're a grown up making an honest living and I'd think they'd be proud, rather than give you grief.

Hey, I know it's always worked for me...!!...:p

Follow Jim's advice, and work towards Tom's advice. Also, the smoke gets in your hair as badly as it does your clothes. Change your clothes and give a quick shampoo. Good to go.

This from the guy who smells of stale beer and haggis.

So, is it just the fact that they hate the smell of the smoke (which I can understand being married to a cigarette smoker... hypocrisy at its finest, I know), or are they some sort of "tobacco-is-the-devil" bible thumpers (no offense to any resident bible thumpers... you obviously do not have a problem with tobacco)? If it's just the smell, shower as soon as you get home and put the clothes in the laundry. If it's the tobacco, itself, show them a pay stub and tell them that if they will match it, you will quit.
