In a pass, you want to put the same (or higher) value as you are taking. Rarity, age, other factors all influence the value of a cigar. Normally, the retail price reflects all these factors. How do you guys determine the value of any given cigar in a pass? Are there pricelists one can use? Or is there a listing of agreed values?

I don't want to offer something that is way under value of what I would like to take but how can I be sure?

I go to an online retailer and compare prices. That's the best way I know of.

Send it to me. After I smoke it I will let you know how much I would have paid for it.

:sign:

I couldn't resist, the question was just begging for it.

You know, I'm glad that question was asked. And I'd like to take it a step further....

I have always stayed in the same "class" of smokes and been okay... For example - I certainly wouldn't trade a Helix for a Montecristo - but I would trade a Monte for a Griffin... If there was an Opus I could see trading a Davidoff Aniversario or Millenium blend, and I doubt I'd be crucified... (but I've often wondered what would happen if I traded a Diamond Crown Maximus for Opus - I'm thinking I might get a little flack from some).

The ones I usually have difficulties with are the "special" releases. The Fuente Anejo's come to mind. I know when we've got them at the retailer, they're in the $7-12 range. Would it be appropriate to trade a Montecristo White for one of those (whose value is a little more than the Anejo, but certainly not as rare)? Or am I obligated to trade another "rare" blend. And if so, what?

I know ISOM's for ISOM's - and I can see not too many being objectionable to trading an ISOM for a "rare" blend (like an Anejo - unless the ISOM was something like a machine made). When we get to ISOM's - I've got a few. I would wonder if it was appropriate to trade a Monte #2 for a Cohiba Esplendido... I'm thinking I might get a little flack for that... Or a Punch Punch Tubos Churchill for a Siglo IV... Are they really the same "class" - certainly the Punch is a little more expensive, but not as sought after.

I agree the person in the pass should discuss the trades, if there are questions, with the pass host. But will that prevent others in the pass who don't feel the trade was equitable, for whatever reason, flaming the passer... I've actually seen quite the opposite - the host was pleased, but others were angry - and the flame wars began...

It all boils down to creating a reputation of the person in the pass. My puts vs. takes is something of a "credit card" situation. If it appears to others I have "abused" the pass, I will not be permitted into passes in the future - that can be worrisome...

I wouldn't do a Montie White for Anejo. might just be me tho.
Anejo for Opus X, yes.

in gen., I view Opus', VSGs, Anejos, PAMs, in the same category, but even that depends on the pass. yes, in gen. a rare-er traded for a rarer is a good idea, but depends.

And yes, passes are a way to be more known, affect reputation. Now, this is not to say you must put in a lot more than you take out just so you're known as generous [tho that never hurts]. Just try to make it so that Ps/Ts are equal, if not a little better, and you're great.

The best way to learn is by doing. Go back and read completed passes to learn more. Read how they went and go from there.

Cigars International
Famous Smoke
Smoke All
JR Cigars
Atlantic Cigar

Check the prices at any of those five as I have found they offer the best prices. I use them in that order too (CI first, Famous 2nd, etc.)

I think we had a similar thread about this a month or two ago but I'm not so good with the search feature however AVB is, he can find anything

I'm only mentioning that as other guys mentioned other on-line retailers that I have not listed so finding that other thread may be helpful to you ;)

Good lord man, are all your punctuation keys broken, Sheeesh

Thanks all for the good advice so far. Particularly CC's list reminded me of my problems of "cross-evaluating". What I mean is, when I see a non-ISOM that I'd like to take but don't have any equal non-ISOMs to put, I would attempt to put an ISOM instead. The problem is that dealers usually either sell ISOMs or non's, so I can't find prices at the same source for both cigars. As you know, prices differ, often dramatically, from source to source, so I have nothing to go by.

I guess if in doubt, I'll consult with the pass host or a FOG.

Is there a 'standard/rule of thumb' of which cigars are in which category?

Some ppl might consider certain cigars premiums while others wont..or hard to find for some ppl might not be so hard to find for others.. etc etc..

And trying to rad some of the past completed passes is like reading a giant flame war...or ppl posting pics of animals..LOL!!

From what I have gathered so far is..

ISOM for an ISOM is preferred..
Rare cigar for and ISOM is permissable
High end stick for a high end stick is preferred
yardgar for a yardgar is preferred
Ask your pass host is this would be an acceptable trade..

BUT NOT accepted..

a cple cheap sticks for a premium/ISOM
a premium for an ISOM

It gets a little but confusing.. seeing as how ppl have different tastes..and some ppl can get sticks at better prices..what i consider a premium cigar due to pricing in my area..someone in another area might get it cheaper and not consider it a premium stick..

Also what do you consider a premium? is it based on pricing? or on the actual overall experience of a cigar?

I'm with CC86 on this as to what I do.

I will check with a list of on-line vendors.

In order of vendor's checked:
CI
JR's
Atlantic
Holts

Then take the box price/quantity= stick price. This is what I use for the value of trading sticks.

There is always the question of rare and very hard to find sticks. Ask the host, FOG or post on the board.

Just my .02. :whistling:

Rare or super premimums should be seperated and cleared with a Fog and especially the host. If you put a super prem. note it in your post so people down the line are aware of its value.

It also helps to post the value you are giving for your puts and takes and clearly noting which put is for which take.

If you don't know...ask. If you think you know and screw up...fess up and learn.
