Chewing tobacco

There are other forms of tobacco that are far less harmful.
Less harmful, yes, but all tobacco is harmful in its own right.

Like cigarettes, dip is nothing more than a nicotine delivery device.
Cigars deliver nicotine as well, and in very large quantities.

Alan, I see and well respect your points. However, we all use different forms of tobacco and nicotine...thats what brings us together in a cigar/ pipe community. I never said it was good for you, in fact, I said to learn from my mistakes. However, by calling it "crap," it's like a slap in the face for those of us that chose that lifestyle, and already live with our choices. I know you didn't say anything degrading about us, just the form of tobacco we use. However, that form is like a part of us, just like cigars is to the whole community. Im sure you wouldn't appreciate someone calling pipes crap. Voicing your opinion, I respect, but please don't go so far as to make those of us with this lifestyle feel uncomfortable.
TheWife© calls my cigars and pipe tobacco crap all the time. I don't take it all that seriously as I'm really not all that sensitive about it. I don't really have a personal relationship with any product (although Penzance has brought me close  )

I don't smoke cigars or pipes for the nicotine. In fact, I don't like cigars or pipe tobacco that gives me a big shot of "Vitamin N". There are many cigars that do not deliver large amounts of nicotine. I also do not smoke cigars that have additives to increase the delivery of nicotine. I know what the addiction to nicotine is like. I smoked cigarettes for about 10 years. I never want to be addicted to another substance, it takes all the joy out of life. I don't enjoy nicotine at all.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with comparing cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to pipes and cigars. To each his own, and I do not mean to insult anyone, I just don't think that it's a valid comparison.

I apologize for making you feel uncomfortable, that wasn't my intent.

Well I don't dip for the nicotine either. I'm a dip connoisseur! I agree it's bad, I know it is. For me, it's still not a big deal. I am having about a can a week at the moment, which by many peoples standards is laughable. I think we need to chill, Alan's not calling anyone out for dipping, he's just witnessed some horrible s**t happen to young people and doesn't want it to happen to any of us. I think that's an admirable enough motive.

That said, I'm about to throw in a nice fat dip of grizz :D

I use to smoke a cigar while Bass fishing but when the lit end touched my line one time.... So, being a nicotine whore(2-4 cigars per day), I took to chewing Lancaster Chewing tobacco, a 'string' type of chew about 11 years ago. I chew it while fishing(3-4 times a week) and sometimes when driving alone. I always have a jug of water with me and when I finish with a cheek full, I spit it out, take a mouth full of water, rinse it around, and spit it out. I drink a lot of water between chews to replace my body's water loss.

I get checked out and have my teeth cleaned every six months. Each time, both the assistant and the dentist comment on how clean my mouth is. Chewing tobacco cuts down on caries too .

Cherry Skoal one time in college. It was a blast at first...then I ended up horking and the love affair was over. Now the smell alone makes me ill.

I enjoyed Red Man, but it went the way of my much beloved Kamel Red Lights when my future wife told me to ditch the tobaccy or we were done (curiously, she bought me my first pipe a couple of years later...cigarettes are still verboten, however).

Tried a mentholated-raspberry snuff once at Al's shop. Stefan was working and thought my reaction was hilarious (watery eyes and what I can only assume was a look of puzzlement and fear).

I have dipped on occasion, It's been several months since my last and it almost only happens when large amounts of alcohol are involved. I generally can't stand the stuff though.

Chew on the other hand is a different story. I chew off and on but never in the company of people that would find it disgusting, I either chew in the car by melsf or with others who chew/dip.

I've tried a few kinds of chew from Redman to Levi Garrett to Beechnut, to some no name twist. Right now I'm on Levi Garrett plug cut. I can't find it very often but I think it's my over all preference.

I keep a tin of snuff around primarily just for the reaction of other people when they try. Someone will see it and ask what it is, I tell them and then I'll do a pinch, naturally they then want to try. It's classic, it may be cruel but I'm Ok with that. ;)

We say Acid cigars are crap and no one gets bothered. Some people still admit they like 'em. Smokeless tobacco is crap, but hey, dip/smoke/chew/sniff what you like. ;)

In cigar language, I dip the Indian Tabac's of dip (grizz and longhorn) a lot. I can't afford to dip the Opus (cope) anymore :p .

I chewed off and on since high school but last year I quit. Coincidentally, my last dip was in Vegas during the CP HERF, June 21, 2007.

Like the others have said, that shit will kill you.

I gotta say I'm pretty surprised so many of you have or do chew tobacco. Call me stupid but I would of never guessed. I did it when I was like twelve threw maybe sixteen. I never really felt addicted and I can't say I completely enjoyed it but I did it anyway because I was young and I guess did things that make no sense.

I smoked cigarettes for about ten years and surprising enough never really felt addicted to those either and quit without much problem. I'm a bit strange that way.

I say if you enjoy chewing then fine but at the first sign of your jaw falling off quit. I can't imagine anything being worth that. Not even heroin for God's sake!

I have entertained the thought of trying snuff. I read a lot of old novels and it seems to have been all the rage in the nineteenth century, kinda curious about it.

thanks for the replies :)

back on topic, i dont really seem any harm done...to me that is, I mean...I brush 3 times a day, floss and mouthwash, and this is most likely short term use... Im getting kind of bored with chew already (its been a month or so?)

anyways, anyone recommend different flavors that are good? or brands? I have no idea what here in Canada sells besides cope and skoal, any place I visit they all seem to just have those two brands...maybe im not lookin in the right places tho..

i usually just chew snuff and straight long cut... I recently bought a tin of skoal mint..tasted like floride from the dentist

Wow, interesting thread. I kind of want to start a topic asking everybody what they think about the consequences of cigars.
I'm pretty susceptible to addictions, I think, so I've stayed away from cigarettes, dip, chewing tobacco, etc. I guess an occasional cigar is my indulgence. :)

Keep in mind that nicotine, if I remember correctly, physically replaces receptors in your brain with nicotine receptors making you physically addicted. Not a good thing if you don't want to have an addiction.

Oh, and also, a number of cigar sites will tell you to keep the cigar in your mouth only long enough to take your puff/draw. Otherwise, the extended period of contact with your mouth will create a much greater chance of cancer/problems (and nicotine bombs in your saliva). Now compare that with dip/chew...

Oh, and this thread is filled with relativism, which is interesting. Can we call dip/chew crap because they are crap? Or can we not call dip/chew crap because "crap is in the eye of the beholder"?

You choice, though. But don't deceive yourself about how dip/chew won't do anything bad to you. (Or cigars for that matter).

well the majority of people seem to enjoy things that are "Bad" for us anyways...whether it be cigars/chew/alcohol or drugs for that matter... guess it depends how much you use and how often you choose to use it...everyones built differently
