Cello on or off? (Actually, I'm serious)

I always take the cedar and ribbons off and re-cello.
^^This.

Also, with other cigars that are packed in cedar.

I have had mold issues with some.

Also, I'm uncertain of the benefits of them being in cedar vs versus resting with other cigars and "melding" (for want of a better term) the tobacco of the cigars.

I leave it on and take my chances. Yes, I have encountered some mold issues.

So, my question is - is there any data that actually backs up or refutes whether or not there is any true benefit to cedar sleeves?

Or any other use of cedar as pertains to cigars?

I know, everybody says it's best, and the cigars age better, etc., etc., etc,

I mean this is one of those things that is so "known" yet may have no true basis in fact and may not have any benefit and could even be a slight negative.

I'm thinking that Cedar probably came into general usage because it was readily available in areas that needed boxes, was inexpensive and did not cause any problems.

However, lack of problems for box material does not necessarily justify use of it for sleeving of individual cigars.

And yes, I have cedar trays built for my wineador, needed trays and that's what they made them out of. Besides, that's how they do it, and why risk it?

But, is it really better? Anybody know of someone asking this question from a scientific viewpoint, and actual analysis in any sort of blind test or controlled situation?

or is it good marketing?

I do wonder.

A cedar sleeve does seem to impart a cedar essence to the cigar in my (quite limited) experience. Presumably it also has protective qualities, though in the case of Anejo that wouldn't seem necessary.

I've always assumed the use of cedar sleeves were purely aesthetic.
My guess, to increase sales.

I have noticed this myself in some instances. It is something I do not care for.

For me, another reason to pull it off.

I was always under the impression it was used to mellow the cigar a bit by imparting a subtle cedar taste....like storing your cigars in a cedar humidor, except you could get the same results even if you stored them in a coolerdor.
