Buying Cubans (I'm in the U.S.)

Unlike many us laws there are pretty much NO LOOPHOLES whatsoever in this treaty especially since they amended it in 2002 or 2004 i forget. No One can bring them in except maybe the Cuban rep that sits in Swiss embassy via diplomatic pouch.

One a side note has anyone seen those things it is hilarious what they are used for and they are by no means little pouches! I was leaving poland one time with a US courier and he had one and all i could hear was the clink, clink of bottles.

This is the first I am hearing about an actual diplomatic "pouch". Hilarious! More like a diplomatic "goodie bag".

edit:grammar

So, what if your canadian, on a long drive crossing the border at customs, currently enjoying a cuban cigar. Will they make you put it out or finish it?

You may want to consider avoiding cubans for a little while if you are new to cigars.  They are very expensive (most of them anyway) and you probably don't have the experienced palatte to differentiate what makes them different compared to a $3 onyx reserve.  It is like buying $100 bottles of wine with ratings in the mid-high 90's when you first start drinking it as opposed to spending $10 on a 90 rated wine.  You will easily be able to tell the difference in time but probably not immediately.

I agree!!

I cut my teeth on Mad Dog 20/20 and Boones Farm back in the day! Giving me GOOD wine back then would have been a complete waste of money. :D

Hi, Jamie76! You might like the El Rey del Mundo (Honduras) cigars. They are available from http://www.jrcigars.com, and at other cigar merchants. Try the El Rey del Mundo (Honduras) Oscuro Robusto. Regards, knightlaird

I agree. If you're new to cigars, there are some VERY good dominicans that can put many cubans to shame, IMO. Cuban's are much more expensive, and just because they are Cuban does not necessarily make them better.

There is a lot of great information on this site, so stick around.

All the best,
Rod

Thanks guys,

I am definitely sticking around. Learning a lot just reading the posts.

I was tempted to ask the same question you did Jamie, but read and realized how sensitive of a subject ISOMs are. If you have any doubt about whether or not you should post something, send a few different people a private message and you can get the response that way.

As an American citizen, it's actually illegal for you to posess Cuban Cigars ANYWHERE in the world.

Hey CC, I gotta disagree with you on this one. I know its the whole trading with the enemy thing, but until they changed the rules a few years ago, when my parents went to Cuba they were allowed to enter the U.S. with $100 worth of Cuban goods. Cigars and rum were usually a part of that $100. It was not illegal for me to have those here. In fact I still have some of those cigars. They were legally brought into this country, so a change in the rules wouldn't make them illegal. So technically, I should be able to smoke those wherever I want.

I would however, agree with you that I would be trading with the enemy if I went somewhere out of the country and bought a Cuban cigar now.

I tend to like Nicaraguan more than the Dom's. But try a few of all. Maybe try the newbie sampler thread. There is no better way to get started expanding you palate, IMO

go and get some padron 6000's they are great and cheap. if you want a real treat get a 1964 padron, but they are costly.

Cuban cigars are definitely not expensive cigars. If you have the right sources you can smoke tons of great Cuban cigars for 4-7 bucks a stick. I just picked up some Punch Double Coronas for 9.32 delivered to my door, as well as some Le Hoyo Des Dieux ( 6 1/4 by 42 ) for 5.56 a stick.

As far as the issue of bringing and smoking Cubans into the states, the answer is yes you can smoke them and bring them in if you are on an authorized trip. When I went to Cuba in 2000 it was an authorized trip and I brought back the following cigars.

Box of Cohiba Robustos

A bundle of 20 custom rolled Cohiba A's

A bundle of 10( 30 braids) custom rolled Partagas Culebras ( Laguito 2 sized)

Yes I was over the 100.00 limit but no one cared.
