Buying Cubans (I'm in the U.S.)

Hi everyone.

I am totally new to the world of cigars. I've seen on a number of what seem to be reputable websites that sell Cuban cigars that it is perfectly legal to buy them (from them of course) as long as you are buying small quanities, like a box or two instead of huge volumes for resale. At the same time, I've come across other sites that say not so. You can only get very small quantities by actually visiting Cuba, and this is only for diplomatic reasons.

So what is true and what is false? I've always wanted to try a Cuban but I can't see myself going to Cuba, and as far as going to say Canada or Mexico to get them, well my luck the border guards would "confiscate" (read take them for themselves) them.

Thanks,
Jamie

*napoleon dynamite voice* Gosh.... friggin idiot! :sign:

As an American citizen, it's actually illegal for you to posess Cuban Cigars ANYWHERE in the world.

Here Jamie. Read this, then rethink your question. Feel free to introduce yourself. This is a community, where folks like to get to know each other. What you're talking about is illegal, period. There's no exceptions to the rule.

And for future reference, no matter what the particular forum is about, whether it's cigars or motorcycles, don't just show up and start asking silly questions like that. Use the search engine and introduce yourself. You may be new to computers and such, but it's rude.

If you do go to mexico, make sure to get the glass top cohibas, they usually sell for the best prices.

Even better, smuggle you a few Cuban cigar rollers into the US, then you'll be set!

Cuban cigars are not legal in America. Buying them, or attempting to import them, is a violation of the Trading With The Enemy Act.
There is no "small volume" allowance for the import or purchase of cuban cigars. The fact that some people are willing to break this law, and some businesses (mostly outside the US) are willing to help those people break the law, does not make it less illegal.

The search function, as well as reading a bit on this site, would ahve answered your question very easily.

Sorry to offend anyone...

As I said, I am a newbie. Didn't mean to post a "stupid question." I assumed that they were illegal, but as I said, I've read a number of sites on it with conflicting information. Just wanted to clear it up.

Sorry again.

I’ve always wondered if this applied if you have dual citizenship.

Don't apologize. Stick around... spend most your time reading, less time posting. And enjoy cigarpass.

Check out the newbie sampler thread, good way to get your feet wet.

For a "beat Down" that was rather tame by comparison.

Welcome to the board by the way and don't let the reactions, although warranted, scare you away.

As for the Cuban cigar or as it is commonly referred to here as ISOM (Island South of Miami) don't fret about not having one or spend alot of time/energy/money in getting one since there are many non-cuban cigars that are outstanding.

p.s. If you want suggestions for good non-Cuban cigars try: Villiger, White Owl (grape and peach), Dutch Masters and any Thompsons label are top notch! ;)

Nice post....right up until the end.

Yes, please stick around, Jamie. There is a lot to learn here. If you read some of the big cigar magazines, you will see that more than half (I'd guess 75%) of the top 20 or so cigars are not Cuban. THere is a whole world of wonderful cigars out there, and Cubans make up only one section of it.
Stick around, learn a bit, smoke a lot...and have fun. There have been MUCH worse entrances into this community.
Fill out your profile, introduce yourself, ask questions...and read more than you post.

Here is a question that I have always wondered. Is it alright for Canadians bring ISOM cigars into the US to smoke while they are visiting?

NO. Cuban products, not just cigars, are not allowed to be imported into the United States regardless if for personal consumption o rand regardless of whether the person bringing them in is not a US citizen.

You may want to consider avoiding cubans for a little while if you are new to cigars. They are very expensive (most of them anyway) and you probably don't have the experienced palatte to differentiate what makes them different compared to a $3 onyx reserve. It is like buying $100 bottles of wine with ratings in the mid-high 90's when you first start drinking it as opposed to spending $10 on a 90 rated wine. You will easily be able to tell the difference in time but probably not immediately.
