wtf?

First I get this e-mail from Jason:
got the message glad to have you in the pass

Then the list comes out and I'm not on it, next I get the following via PM:
hey FT I'm sorry but I was hoping to get to see some more post this weekend to get to know you a little better. a couple of folks on cp recommended we get you on the next one nothing personal bro, just keep posting. :(

Of course it's understandable to be leery of a new member, but if that was the case why was I initially accepted for the pass and then later told sorry, no cigar? If you were apprehensive or in doubt about me AT ALL, why didn't you contact me to give me the chance to let you get to know me better. "Hoping" that I'll post doesn't seem like a very effective way to go about it. I've been hoping to get a big wad o' money in my mailbox for years but so far it hasn't happened. :)

I did check in several times over the weekend and there was little or no activity on this thread so I didn't feel the need to post anything. Besides, I was already in, right? (Have you also considered that I might have been out of town for a three-day weekend? I wasn't, but you couldn't have known that.) If you had contacted me, I would have been happy to refer you to my "body of work" on a.s.c. where I post pretty regularly under the same name. Feel free to google it up.

I know this decision wasn't directed at me personally, but it's hard not to take it that way. I feel like I've been found guilty without even a trial.

Father T,
Maybe I can help. This sounds like a misunderstanding of sorts.

In my experience, when I was new here, I had very few posts and wanted to get into a pass. Dave was doing one at the time that sounding like fun. So, I asked to join. Dave did have a stipulation though, anyone under 100 posts had to give him a confirmed telephone number. So, I did that and got into the pass, and everyone lived happily everafter!

If I were you, I would email Jason and offer something like this. See if that works. I don't think it's you personally, I think he's just trying to protect his investment!

Hope this helps and welcome, get to postin!

Leebo :D :D

FT... Chill a bit bro... First... this is Jason's FIRST pass, and he does NOT have the benefit of several hundreds of posts of advice on this score.

While I can never speak for another let me give you the perspective of a guy who has YET to do a pass, because I am waiting to go through a couple as a participant before I dare undertake what is an exacting role.

1. If I had done as he did and was advised by a veteran of the potential damages of a completely unknown entity.. Like Jason I would have had to eat crow and withdraw my initial acceptance of a pass member in light of wiser advise.. and admit I had made a mistake and explain the situation.

2. I know this would make anyone receiving the message angry... but it would NOT have been personal

3. As much as we would like to get involved from the instant we learn of these passes.......it is worth its weight in gold to spend a week at least reading posts and learning the personalities of its' participants.. because otherwise it is hard to appreciate what you take from the pass and who put it there.

4. There will be ( assuming you are 18 or older) anywhere from 20 to 80 years of passes to enjoy. Give Jason a break and dont take anything personally. I have found already that most of the decisions made around here about passes and participants come from a LOT of experience and wisdom. For both Jasons and your sake... enjoy meeting folk... be happy to jump in on the next one or 2 or 3.. heh

5. I too am new and know little about the boards, but I am getting older each day and wiser about people... and know most of these folk have learned the hard way. Don't take offense at being mistrusted to begin with.. Just meet everyone and earn trust. It is always earned, and never given lightly. Therefore it is worth more than gold. Sorry if I have rambled...

Leebo, thanks for your reply.

First of all, I would have been more than happy to provde a phone number had I been asked for one. I may have even offered in my original e-mail - don't remember. Secondly, if he was concerned about it, why did I get invited into the pass and then later omitted?

Of course he's trying to protect his investment. Not only his but everyone's in the pass. Being his first, I'm sure he's trying to err on the side of caution. I understand all that. What I *don't* understand is being told I'm in and then later being told I'm out without so much as a chance to prove myself.

Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.....think I'll go smoke a cigar. :)

Father T,
He's new just like we all were at one time, cut him a break and try to get over it so we can enjoy each others company here!

Thanks

Enjoy the cigar!

Leebo :D

Firestorm,

1. Yes, I"m an unknown entity. What steps were taken to make me less of one?

2. As I said, I know it's not personal.

3. I've been reading posts for a few weeks now. Didn't feel the need to post anything since I wasn't in any of the passes.

4. Ok, point taken.

5. Trust only comes through taking a chance and seeing the risk pay off. I can post here for years and still screw up a pass. I would NEVER do so, but you don't know that. The only way you'll ever trust me is to try me out and find out I'm a pretty good guy like everyone else around here. My problem isn't that I was mistrusted to begin with. I expected that. What I object to is not being given an opportunity to BE trusted.

Yes indeed, Bob!

Father T, as you may have noticed, we have a very friendly atmosphere here!

Please take the advise and I'm sure things can be worked out so that the're no hard feelings.

Also as important, post around a bit so that people begin to get to know you better!

Long Ashes,

Leebo

FT I more than understand the frustration factor!

Here being known has a lot more to do with what you say than what you read. Reading enlightens YOU, but never lets anyone else know where your head and heart are. Trust is ALL about head and heart. Even here few will jump through hoops to draw you out to learn what is you. It is your initiative in giving everyone a flavor of your thinking early and often.. ( until Emo tells you to STFU.......kidding emo! :D ), that will let us meet you. A cigarpass is not about sending around a box of cigars to strangers, but sharing what is wonderful to us with brothers who share an interest. Again I speak from what I feel here after a couple weeks... but that is what I love about this place, I feel that is what everyone else loves, and what I hope you will come to love if you give it a chance.

Talk to us! Let us know YOU! We will reciprocate warts and all...yours to love, yours to hate......yours to pass with.......or escape from... always your choice :)

Time holds no secrets. It bares everything....( in time) LOL

:D

Now, Father T, you have not one but TWO Social Workers asking you to come in, post around and enjoy the company!

LMAO

I think everything will work out. It all depends on how you look at the situation....you can look at a glass of beer as being half-full or half-empty!

Cheers!

Dammit...you had to go and bring up beer didn't you? And I'm all out. :(

Around me, beer glasses are neither half-full nor half-empty....not for long anyway. :)

Hmmmm, what else have I got....<rummages through liquor cabinet>....guess that 18 year old single malt will have to do. Cheers.

Hey there FT. I'm just heading off to bed, so I don't have time to go into a long drawn out post. Just two quick points to make.....

1: Don' get angry and leave in disgust - perhaps it was wrong, perhaps it wasn't. The point is, there'll be PLENTY more passes to join. Who knows, you may even start one of your own soon.

2: Look at how this discussion has bumped up your post count. I rememer back to the days of the big flame war with Henry. I increased my post count in ONE NIGHT by close to 150!!!!! Man oh man, we need anoher good flame war around here!

LMAO

Dave :D

Hi Dave, thanks for the nice words.

To respond to your points

1. The thought has crossed my mind to leave in disgust. I'm certainly disgusted enough. But I don't want to be thought of as a quitter. I'm sure this will all just be a distant memory soon...especially with my memory...heh. Yes, there will be other passes. But to focus on my not getting to participate in the pass is to completely miss the point. This isn't about missing out on a pass....what's one pass in a career of cigar smoking, eh? Just missing a pass isn't something I'd get this worked up over. This is about the assumption of dishonesty and the lack of opportunity I was given to dispel that assumption. It's about keeping one's word. And owning up to one's mistakes. In a word, trust. Ironic dont ya think?

2. Well, I'd like to see my posts be toward something a little more positive and on-topic. To that end, I've been posting in the Cigar Discussion threads as well. Seems that's the only way I can give the good folks here a warm fuzzy that I'm not going to run off with their boxes. I hang out on usenet and Slashdot mostly and we certainly have our share of flamefests there. I was thinking it'd be a nice change of pace here...lol. More irony. I don't mind donning the Nomex and cranking the flamethrower up to 11 when necessary, but it gets old. Sometimes you just want to talk about cigars, or wine, or Unix, or whatever twists your twinkie without having to trample a bunch of people in the process.

One last time just so everybody's clear. I know this wasn't personal. I know that Jason *thought* he was doing the right thing. I know that you guys don't know me from Adam's off ox. I know it's better to be safe than sorry. But I also know that I was promised something and then renigged on without an explanation or an opportunity to 'defend' myself. I'm sure I'm making more out of it than you think it deserves, but I can't help the way I feel. And I feel the situation was mishandled and that I'm owed an apology. If you feel that's petty, so be it.

Thanks again, Dave....I appreciate it. ttys......

:sign:
hehehehe

He said Slashdot....

God, I had to get off of there, there are too many people on /. that only want to pick a fight.  Besides, the people here are a hell of a lot nicer than most of the flame-baiters that float on /.

I've only been on this board about a week, and I gotta tell ya, don't quit.  Hang out, post some stuff and sooner than later people respond.  This board is more like real life, which is kind of refreshing.  The people here are great, friendly and honorable.

I think maybe this incident was one of those things that happens to everyone eventually.  I'd take it as "ahhh F'sck it", or rm dir "bad_exp" and git in on the next pass.  I'm going to do one after Big Worm and Jasons.  So look for that in a few weeks.  It'll be my first as pass-master..

It's all about the   of the stogie...

let me know if anyone has a problem with the order. ;)

I'm going to try to get this out tommorow.
