My first experience with this cigar was not good. It was bland and had very little flavor but I think there was something up with my palate the night I smoked it.
This time I was treated with beautiful flavors of sweet cocoa and a nutty flavor like TGM described. It kept getting stronger in flavor as I smoked it and I put it down with a few inches to go.
A great smoke but I don't know if I'd say it was worth $11-12. Maybe more like $7-8.

I got a late start with the Liga 9 last night so I did not make it back to the board to make my report. As previously noted, thanks to Bruce for sending me one of these sticks since I was clearly not going to break my boycott of all things Drew Estates in order to try one.
Here we go:
For this smoking experience, I chose a Russell's Reserve Bourbon as the drink of choice. I have to admit, the cigar is handsome. It looked good, smooth wrapper, tasteful band, good size and nice heavy construction...already better than any other Drew Estates product I have seen.
The light up was easy enough and I was immediately met with a nice sweet taste (ok, I just used a positive adjective on something from Drew Estates). Somewhat creamy but very light in flavor. I have to admit that upon lighting, I was thinking that this cigar would develop into a blockbuster. I was looking for a good gun to go crow hunting.
After twenty minutes or so, the cigar was burning too slowly for my tastes. I was getting a bit annoyed by the fact that the 'oh so promising' flavors were still coming through lightly. Yes, good flavors, no, not enough of them. I turned to my trusty torch to put a bit more burn in the cigar...that resulted in more smoke, but not more flavor. I kept rolling with the cigar until it was a little more than an inch long. I would not call this an air ball but those good flavors were far too faint for me.
The construction of this cigar is fantastic. Its appearance is classic. I would gladly dine on some crow if those flavors could have a stronger delivery. Did I get a mild one? Are they all mild-ish?
With the jury still out, I have resigned myself to paying the $8.50 that Eric at the Party Source is asking for one of these. Yes, Drew Estates will get $8.50 of my money and that is a thought that makes me twitch.
I can see what you fellows are talking about with this one. I can see how it could be amazingly good. If my next one carries more flavor then I will be a believer.

I have also had some that seem milder than others.

My palate gets a lot out of them right now. I'm experiencing the same thing with Padron Cigars, and the Coronado by LFD (came out in 2006), for years I just could't get a whole lot of flavor intensity from Padrons, and the Coronados seemed delicious, but reticent. Lately, I'm picking up all the flavors gangbusters
Todays cigars are just so good. A good time to be a cigar smoker.

Great review, glad you finally had one. As far as it being mild-ish i have had a few like that if they are right out of the B&M, however i have had ones that are a bit stronger if they sat in my humi for a while so i guess i have to send one of the few that i have sitting in my humi for a month or two. I really like these as an every-day 'gar, and holy shit i wish i could pay $8.50 a stick , i can't find them for under $12 a stick around here. Any-who glad you finally bit the dust and tasted crow.
Bruce and I split the box he sent you one of and I've had mixed experiences with them compared to the one I did a review of.

Not all cigars of the same line are going to be as good as the best one of them you have smoked. Too many factors in a natural product to make each and every one a gem.
I will say this however, even the "not so good" ones were better than any Altadis cigar I've ever smoked including the H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon which I'm fond of.
I will continue to make these cigars part of my regular rotation.

Very interesting... all my experience with the Coronado has been absolutely awesome. Certainly medium bodied flavours, but blended in such an enjoyable way. I am surprised to find you regarding that particular smoke as reticent.
Probably a bad choice of words, Macion. For my personal experience it means that I wanted more of that flavor. It is, to me, one of the most delicious cigars I've smoked. I've smoked about 50 Coronados. All excellent smokes, but two of them were Flavor bombs. I.e., more full flavored than the typical Medum flavor intensity. I wished all smoked like those two..... :love: :love: :love:
But, lately, I'm getting more from them. I don't think it's the cigar, I think it's me.
Edit to add: I should also clarify that the Padrons I'm speaking of are the regular line, not the top shelf smokes.
I'm in complete agreement. Some are rather uninspiring, tending toward harshness. But the good ones are lush, rich, and make the chase worthwhile.

My experience the other night was indeed lush and rich. My first experience with this cigar...not so much. That's why I would not spend full price on this stick. I'll have to say when you do get a good one it is excellent.

As much as I've enjoyed the Liga Privada in the past, I haven't had one in a while. Thanks for helping make my decision on tonight's smoke, fellas. I haven't had any that were less than wonderful, but I could have just been lucky.

I sampled the Coronado not that long ago, and immediately ordered a box. As well as their amazing flavour, I was surprised to find that this was one of those rare cigars that you could abuse however you liked, and it would never turn bitter. I tend to hotbox a cigar to see what flavours will develop, and I found that smoking this cigar hotter seemed to caramelize the flavours... what trickery is that? Certainly one of my favourite Non-Cuban cigars.
In reply to your post, I would certainly say that three identical smokes could taste different in varying circumstances. Mood and relaxation will effect your appreciation of a fine stogie more that we would like to admit. I found the less you smoke, the more special each cigar tends to be regarding the attention it recieves. Though... who could really cut back on such a lovely habit just to make the cigars you do smoke more special?
