BOSTON, December 7, 2008 — The Boston Public Health Commission is scheduled to vote soon on expanded smoking restrictions that would be among the nation's toughest. The proposal would ban cigar bars and hookah bars, which currently enjoy exemptions from Boston's four-year-old workplace smoking ban. It would also eliminate sales of tobacco in pharmacies and on college campuses.

The commission gave preliminary approval to the rules in September, and is scheduled for a final vote Thursday (December 11, 2008).
Boston would be the largest city, by far, to outlaw smoking bars. Hegarty was baffled about what the city hoped to accomplish, and said it seemed almost unconstitutional.

* * * Please Write A To Mayor Menino * * *

Even if you have previously written a letter to Boston Mayor Menino, we urge you to write a second letter which states that you are a cigar enthusiast and oppose the PROPOSED SMOKING BAN for parks, outdoor patios of restaurants, and cigar lounges.

You can write to Boston Mayor Menino at: mayor@cityofboston.gov.
Please copy info@cigarrights.org so that we can share your letter with your fellow cigar enthusiasts.
Or, if you prefer to call the Mayor directly, he can be reached at (617) 635-4500.

If you're from the Boston area, I suggest you do write a letter to Mayor Menino. If your not, you're wasting your time. Nothing strengthens a New Englander's resolve more than someone from California, or anywhere else for that matter, telling them how they should be running their affairs.

Doc.

I don't doubt that this is true but CRA asked that they be copied on the e-mail. If enough e-mails are received by the mayor’s office with CRA CC'ed, they may get the idea that cigar smokers are actually organizing against such bans. It may not help with this particular ban, but it may start letting politicians know that we have had enough and are pushing back.

I would think this trait would have the local private business owners up in arms with the mayor telling them how to run their businesses. Hopefully their resolve is as strong as I think it is. :thumbs:

Several Iowa bar owners recently went at a committee to have the Iowa smoking ban reviewed to exclude bar owners. Their proposal was rejected by a 6-2 bipartisan decision. Smoking in casinos remains legal, since the casino workers' health isn't a concern to our elected officials. :rolleyes:

Myself and a group of my friends have sent in dozens of email to Mayor Menino asking him to consider the right of cigar smokers as opposed to cigarette smokers as we are a small group but a vocal minority. we said that cigar smokers being a bit older, we vote in higher numbers and we know when our rights are being denied. Hopefully the Mayor is a reasonable man.
