Bolivar Petit Corona, 1997

Ring Gauge: 42
Length: 5"
Puro

The box has been resting comfortably in the cool-r-dor for a while. When opened each stick was exactly like the one next to it, They are unbelievably aromatic. I picked one at random to have while out in the yard with the dog.

The wrapper is very nice looking, a uniform medium brown, smooth with very small veins. I did notice the triple cap that was discussed in an earlier review, the pictures really help illustrate what to look for. I took my XiKar Titanium cutter out of the genuine stingray case and clipped about eighty percent of the cap. Looking at the filler from the foot is very even and tightly compressed. The wrapper has a very earthy tobacco aroma. I finally lit the cigar, the taste is very good, complex. I could actually pick out the flavors for a change (coffee and cocoa) with almost every draw. Rich from the start with a little spice almost peppery, very full bodied, flavorful not overpowering, never bitter. It remained fairly consistent until about an inch from the end when, because I probably had smoked it too quickly, it was getting a little harsh. The burn was absolutely perfect, no touch ups whatever. The draw was just ok, you have to pull a little hard for this particular stick as compared to other PC’s I’ve had. The cigar has a nice finish that stays with you for a while, all in all I like these. I like the size and it's one of the better PC's flavor wise I've had.

I've noticed with the petit corona's that you don't get the copious amounts of dense smoke from the draw that I have seen in other sizes. This may be because of the tighter draw on this particular one. This is a great smoke with a glass of wine.

This was my first Bolivar Petit Corona, I’m looking forward to having the next one. Highly recommended.

Edited the length thanks to CC.

Hey DT,

Nice review! The BPC is one of my favorites. You described the Bolivar flavors very well. Would you believe I prefer this vitola young? They're good in any case. Almost all of the BPC and BCJ I have been smoking lately have drawn very well. I get very full billows of smoke. And the wrapper, well, most 2005 specimens I've seen have just been magic.

To get you boys all hot and bothered, here's a shot of some stellar '05 Boli Coronas Juniors. They are a tad shorter, begin of the Minutos vitola.

Nice comments on a great cigar. I usually get great billows of smoke from these. I think a more open draw will get you a lot more smoke. YMMV of course.

Likely my favorite overall cigar. I just got a cab of 05s in and so far they have all been tight. I think the flavor is there, it's just they tend to limit the draw and smoke. When you do get a good one, they are GOOD. I've got them resting at about 63% to see if that helps open them up. . .

SuperT,

Unless they are out and out plugged, time and drier conditions can do wonders for a tight draw.

That is my hopes. They come from a reliable vendor who has always shipped me top notch stock. I smoked one or two right off the truck which was a mistake. They've been sitting since (about 1.5 months) at 63-64ish%. I'm hoping they open up.

I have heard from many others that their 05 BPCs are tight as well. . . :(

So what you are all saying is that these are a good smoke, and one that should find it's way into my humi?

How do they compare to others in this size range, such as the Siglo II and the Monte No. 4?

I'm a PC whore, plain and simple. But being that PC whore, I've never sampled a Siglo II.

I love the MC4, underrated IMO. It gets a bad rap for being inconsistent. I don't find it that way at all. I've smoked NUMEROUS boxes and never had a bad/tight one. I find the MC4 creamy and beany (cocoa, vanilla, coffee). I love that profile and it ranks right up there with my favorite cigars.

The BPC is more robust, more 'in your face'. It is earthy and has that unmistakable 'Boli flavor' that I only find in Bolivars. If you find you like BBF, BRC, BCE, etc - I'd say it is more intense, but along those lines. To me it ranks up there with the MC4 and PLPC as 'king of the PCs'. The closest Boli I can compare it to would be the Regentes.

Huh. Too bad there was no address in your profile, otherwise you might have had a surprise coming...

Oh well, live and learn! :sign:

Crap Gonz, you have my address, send me some Boli PCs or other same sized cigars!

If you like rich, earthy flavors and robust tobacco, then the BPC is a good one to try. Personally, I have yet to have a good Monte 4. While it certainly has a very different flavor profile than the Bolis, I'd say the inconsistency has to do with instances of sticks with an almost complete blandness to them. This has been the case with the Monte 4 in the form of the Monte 4 as well as the Petit Tubos. The Sig II is much milder and a bit sweeter IMO without the rich tobacco flavor. I'd put up some Sig II if they weren't so pricey. As it is, the Juan Lopez, Boli, RA and RA petit coronas meet most of my needs. The PLPC is just so hard to find or so pricey that I can't really consider it a candidate for smoking rotation. Oh, and if you like the PC size, it might be worth your while to try the tubos (Hdm Coronations, Punch Coronations, RyJ Romeo No.2 Deluxe) for a change.

I keep the cool-r-dor at 65%. I think that's the plan my friend, in a month or so I'll do a follow up...

Where did you get the "5 1/8" length from?

This cigar is a Mareva vitola. The dimensions are supposed to be 5" x 42.

I guess I will have to add this one to my wish list. The only cubans I have tried were a Punch Punch and a Cohiba 35th aniversario. I have been toying with the idea of ordering a box or sampler of cubans. This will go on my list. Thanks for the great review!
