Bolivar Gold Medals

You can get a few Behike at $800 per stick. :)

Damn...that's pretty steep for a release that was priced at 18k euros. Also, IMO these cigars derive their value as a whole rather than broken out as singles. Because of its exclusivity as a a package, to me, these fall in the category of "the whole being greater than its parts."

I agree 100% Sam.

Some blame it on currency conversion... :sign:

I've not seen any 80's BGMs for $1000. I'd say closer to $3500-$5000 for a proven box. But, I've not seen any prices for a while.

I saw the 1000 per stick price on the net so i am sure it was very high but even 5000 per box is 500 per stick.I dont think you could find a proven box for sale so the price is really moot anyway.

Check the past auctions at Christie's. That would be the standard for a going rate of such boxes.

It was some time ago, perhaps a year, when I was offered a questionable box of the re-release, and at the same time offered a private sale of the 80's for 2500 pounds. I don't know what the conversion was at the time, but I do know that it was well more than I wanted to spend for 10 cigars...even these.

I wish someone would approach me with an '04 box for sale. :whistling:

The last lot offered at Christie's was in May of 2006. It was one box from the 70's and the expected price was £1000-1500. I don't think they sold.

Hey Matt I don't see where they were offered at the May 2006 auction.. Do you have a lot number

Bob

Lot number 1293. They weren't sold so are not on the results list. You'd have to have the catalog to see the listing and expected hammer price. If I remember correct, many of the cigars offered at that particular auction were not in the best of shape. Many things were either dropped from the catalog at sale time or not sold.

Hi Matt

I'm not sure where you got that information from but there was no lot # 1293. I dont understand what you mean when you say many things were dropped from the catalog at sale time. Do you mean that items were retracted prior to the auction?

Bob

My mistake... it was May 2005, not 2006.....and I was looking at May 2006 results. These did sell at £1600...... I had also mixed up what I was told about a more recent sale that had several items that did not sell. They were offered but did not reach the reserve prices and were not sold.

No problamo. I thought that you probably had inverted something.

Know of two boxes from the 80's that went for $3500.00 each in the last month.

I paid less than $280 for a box of ten including quick shipping. It was not to be first in line nor due to impatience, but because this is one of the holy grail cigars for me and several other attempts at requistioning these cigars have failed. Get 'um while you can, I guess. Perhaps I missed it, but what is the expected number of the GM's to be released. Again, its all how much it is worth to the individual.

I've never understood the "holy grail" designation for these cigars. Sure, the originals have a unique taste, but to me it certainly doesn't warrant much. Must be the rarity... that and people like purty gold shiny things. :)

I don't believe a "holy grail" cigar can be defined by anything in particular. Each person has their own. Some are easy to get, some rarer and more expensive. In fact, I have a LGC No.2 sitting in the humi that I would consider one of my other "holy grail cigars". I could buy three boxes in the next five minutes, but it doesn't diminish that special feeling that comes along with it. It is just one of those things that get the juices flowing when I think about it...and I like shiny thing too! ;) Oh, and I don't have $3500 laying around.

I was told by my local B&M owner a month or so ago that the GM will be priced at around 30-40 CAD (after taxes :) ) so I am thinking that it will be a lot more reasonably priced than people are thinking. Again, this is just what he said, so nothing set in stone. Although I am inclined to believe him because he normally attends the Festival every year.

Perhaps the one you had was a bit flat? Regardless, the rarity alone makes them something sought after. Much like the Davidoff or Dunhill. Quality tobacco and quality workmanship equals a sought after cigar. I feel the same about Opus. Good tobacco, cood quality, but doesn't do a lot for me. I feel DC Maximus a far better buy.

Hmmm...Canadian and US dollars are essentially 1 to 1. I have two boxes of the new release and didn't pay anything near 30-40 a stick. Am I missing something?

You forget that the Canadians are raped almost as badly as the English when it comes to tobacco taxes.
