The Stunt Man. Starring Peter O'Toole, Steve Railsback and Barbara Hershey. In it's time it was beeing compared to Citizen Kane, but fell victim to nasty Hollywod politics(see The Sinister Saga of Making The Stunt Man) and Star Wars was released about the same time.

I'd second a couple of the ideas already tossed in; Memento, Wild At Heart, Evil Dead. . .

I'd also add these few:

Rushmore (a Wes Anderson piece of genius)

Waiting for Guffman (a Eugene Levy/Christopher Guest "mockumentary" masterpiece)

Best In Show (another Levy/Guest "mockumentary" masterpiece)

Thin Red Line, Great Flick!

Good call on Nick Cage in Wild at Heart, it's a lost clasic...Quite the character.

Ya know I didnt really like Thin Red line. I felt it didnt have any plot and flowed very poorly. I felt Nolte really overtly appeared to be trying to polish a terd.

No one has mentioned Stanley K's Full Metal Jacket or did I miss that?

Boy I wish they would put that out on DVD in widescreen.

Most of those movies are rather main-stream. When I think of unknown films... I think of things that didn't make the big screen. I second:

Momento
Donnie Darko
Boondock Saints

I'll add:

The Man Who Wasn't There

But my all time favorite "little known" film is:

SLC PUNK!

Matt Lillard (Steve-O) Rocks.

He's also Cereal Killer in Hackers, another awesome "little known" film.
