I don't know about the geico, but with the insurance comp. I work for, and atleast in TN, if you hit a deer, dog, dumb animal, you lose your comp dect. and it doesn't count aganist you. Sad to say I'd take out a couple of deer before hitting anything else.

I've hit 2 deer in 5 years up here and it stinks every time. Our insurance (Allstate) has been very good, but our rates have gone up a tad. Hopefully your insurance company will treat you guys right.
The bad thing here is that it isn't just a "rural" problem anymore. The deer have infiltrated the city and people are hitting them left and right during the fall and spring. It has gotten so bad that they have a controlled bow hunt in certain areas of the city to thin the herd out.
Some advice my grandpa gave me that seems to work is if your about to hit a deer and it cannot be avoided, floor it. The deer will be more likely to just bounce off instead of coming up on the hood and possibly through the windshield. I don't know if there's any science behind it, but the deer I've hit have all gotten that treatment and they do bounce off pretty good.
Deer = giant rats (but they are tasty )

This is a little fact that I learned in....a cigar shop.
I was told that if you run over a deer or any other animal that is dead in the road, then your insurance WILL NOT pay a dime. But, if you hit a deer, thus it was totally unavoidable, then they will pay.
Might change your story in the future. Any insurance experts know the true story?

Glad to hear that your wife is doing well and that the car is repairable. It is after all only a car.
