The "hacker" inserted a piece of code via his web browser, altering the member group of the forum. So, when someone logs in as a 'member', he is automatically directed to another website which is hosting the virus.

This hack is fixable, however you must be able to access the admin control panel to fix it.

Over the last 3 days my buddy's web sites - he host's many - have been hit with multiple spam attacks and FTP attacks...so, a virus plant is not all that unheard of today!

Many don't consider this type of vandalism all that serious. More along the lines of TPing someone at Halloween. Of course, it is a serious crime and can cause substantial loss if it disrupts a business.
