Growing too fast.
I haven’t had an Opus in a while, since by birthday in August actually, so figured I’d smoke one this afternoon. I just slid a baking dish full of Apple crisp in the oven and have about 40 minutes before it’s ready, so picked out this No. 4 as it should be right about that time. Typical rosado colored wrapper that is smooth with the exception of a small vein here and there, very firm, feeling slightly light as far as the weight. I punch the cap and find the draw a bit on the loose side, should be okay, however I prefer a little more resistance when smoking stronger cigars. Guess I’ll be taking it slow on the draw.
After the foot is lit and burning well, I take a couple puffs to get the smoke flowing, and then a slow draw. There’s a black pepper spice on the back of the throat and over the tongue that isn’t powerful, but still fairly strong with the smoke full strength yet smooth over the palate. I’m getting a rather rich roasted nut flavor with a bit of worn leather and cedar wood, the finish a bit short starting out.
As typical with Opus, the cigar starts to mellow out about a half inch or so in, the black pepper spice calming down, but the strength definitely remaining full. The burn is sharp with a dark gray ash forming that is quite flaky but holds strong until tapped off. As previously stated, the draw is a little too loose for my liking, especially with the strength of the smoke, so I’m having to take very slow, short draws which works well. I exhale slowly through the mouth and nose, very much enjoying the flavors of the rich smoke that gives a nice tingling in the nostrils. The finish is now becoming much more lasting on the palate.
Halfway in and the burn goes to one side pretty badly, so I have to do a slight touch up to get the burn back even. Delicious, rich smoke is flowing well in the draw and seems to have mellowed a bit the further in going to more of a good medium strength with the spice hitting the back of the throat just right. Flavors continue to be seemingly rich and consistent as previously described, the finish lasting well after exhaling.
I had a time getting the band off this thing as it was really glued on, cracking the wrapper in a couple places. What an excellent cigar this was with decent enough burn, delicious flavors, and excellent, lasting finish. Right at the end, I could feel a slight buzz coming on, however a good one that was quite enjoyable.
