Anyone live near Austin, TX?

I don't know anything about Texas other than I had a good time when I was in San Antonio years ago, but I commend you, Rod, for taking the initiative to get out of a situation you find less than desirable. It takes guts and so few of us are willing (or in some cases unable) to do what you're doing.

I've lived and traveled all over the country, right now I've been living in the Dallas area for more than six years.

If I could pick one place to live, it would be Austin. The pros - good food, good music, good vibes, Austin City Limits music festival. The cons - traffic, inflated real estate (at least for Texas, probably good deals for you CA folks).

Some folks in Texas consider Austin to be a "hippie town" - think Venice Beach without the ocean. To me, it reminds me of New Orleans, without the insane crime and immense poverty. Austin does have a bit of a homeless problem downtown, but nowhere near what you see in Santa Monica near the beach.

Rod, you should definitely check it out. I think you'll like it.

I moved to Austin in July. Look in the Lakeway area or northwest Austin for some nice luxury homes in affluent areas. Real estate is reasonable and the services are top notch. This is a great place to raise kids - the difference in the educational systems is startling.

I was hoping Elktwin would jump in. Had a nice herf with him while I was visiting Austin.

My parents own a second home in Cedar Park (Austin suburb on north side). My brother is living there running his web design company out of it. Parents probably will move there.

My family and my parents had Christmas there this year. Nice homes in the hill country around the lake but pretty much nice homes all around. Construction everywhere. Some good investment buys in housing. Rod you will like it there.

Watch out for the Zombies though

Thanks Boar, good info.

What are some major (good) hospitals in/near Austin? I work in healthcare IT, and want to stay in this industry. Got out of banking IT and didn't look back.

Being as I work in healthcare for Aetna, here is a link to some facilities in the area contracted with Aetna.

Lots of great info, thanks guys. We're looking at planning a trip out to Austin sometime soon to check it out. From what I've read online, sounds like one of the best places to live.

You make it to Austin yet?

Spending the night downtown tonight for the first time. Very nice place, and 6th street is very nice. Though, as previously stated, there does seem to be a homeless problem there and it's hot as hell! I think it made it 101 today, and this Cheesehead isn't used to that.

The surrounding area seems real nice and the 'hill country' seems nice also. If you want to go play in the water there's Horseshoe Bay about 40mi northwest. Very nice resort community. I flew in there today before coming to Austin.

I really like visiting Texas...the people here are really nice. They remind me of the Irish.

Truth be told, Houston probably has the best and most numerous hospitals in the state. St. Luke's, UTMB, Baylor Med... and every good sized city has reasonably good cigar shops (other cities are better than Houston for cigars probably, but it is passable.)

UTMB is doing some building right now that would make them have some openings.

Hey HandyPilot, I was at Horseshoe Bay as well for the 4th. My friends own a lakehouse in the resort. Weather was hot as hell, including the water, 88deg. The sites at the sandbar were not all that bad either ;)
