Any gardners this year?

Damn John, nice job.

Is anyone else having to manually pollinating your squash/zucchini?

I haven't thought to try that but I probably will now. I've lost a bunch of my baby squash that rotted on the vine. I know it could be blossom end rot but it can also be from poor pollination. From what I remember it was more the whole fruit rotting not just the end which suggests poor pollination.

I either use a paint brush or Q tip and manually do it, just to ensure it's happening, since I don't have any pollinators. I know mine are poor pollination b/c the ones I don't get to, die off like yours.

Just make sure you're pollinating correctly, LOL. There are 2 different types of flowers. Also, the flowers are open early in the mornings, so that's when I do it.
Yes and apparently the female flowers are only fertile for one day. I guess I need to find some squash Viagra. :D

...snip
Hornworms that I pulled off my tomatoes yesterday, these things can eat a plant in a day or two, crazy things:

These little bastards can decimate a tobacco crop too. I'll be seeing them soon I'm sure. Got sumptin' for 'em this year though. :D

Some very nice looking gardens here. Any of you grind up your old cigar nubs and make insecticide?

Never heard of that, I have been using Sevin dust, but that's it.

Not a bad idea to use cigar nubs. Nicotine is a natural insecticide. Grind up some old Nic puro nubs, that'll take care of them!

There are a couple of methods of preparation and usage of nicotine as a pesticide, however, one must remember that nicotine is a poison and can be fatal to humans and pets, in very small quantities, and take the necessary precautions.

I, personally, use cigar nubs and the stems and cuttings from previously harvested and processed tobacco to produce both a "tea" and a dry powder. They are effective when properly used, and safe when proper precautions are observed, imho and YMMV of course.

I heard tobacco juice is not good for tomatoes.........Have you tried the tobacco juice on them?

You are correct, it is not a good idea to even plant tobacco too close to tomatoes since they are in the same family and will "cross-breed". Even hear of tomacco?

Yes, I was told that if you smoke, you should wash your hands before handling your tomato plants. That's why I was curious.

I've never actually tried nicotine as an insecticide. I've only heard that it could be used for one. My gardening woes stem more from the current drought we're going through (in Texas) rather than pests. :(

Have you ever successfully grown tomacco without plutonium?

If you are looking for safe natural insecticide, find anything with Bacillus Thurigensis in it. This is the same BT that is bred into corn plants for corn borer protection. It is a naturally occuring insecticide that is harmless to people but will do a number on your hornworms.

I expanded my garden to about 10x14 and it's going well. Planted onions, potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumber, bell peppers, jalapenos.....think that's it. Finally was able to grow some broccoli, and had a damn good potato yield (first year growing them). I've pulled about 8 yellow squash, 3 jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, sunburst tomatoes.

Anyone else growing a vegetable garden and have pictures of them?

Yep, here's mine... herbs are in the bottom left corner, strawberries are in the bottom right corner... veggies are everywhere else.

I really like that! Any details on setting it up? Just water at the top and let flow down? Holes in the bottom of the gutters?

I helped Austen build the verticcal garden. I am def gonna be adding one of my own to my set up next season. Very simple setup. Just make sure the gutters are at a slight angle and cut a small hole in the endcap on the low side of the gutters so the runnoff can trickle down.

Nope, but a guy in Oregon has.........the original idea and concept of tomacco dates back to the 50's, and was accomplished through grafting.
