Any Beatles fans?

There was another camp back in the olden days, those who listened to Surf music and those that were hip. I was hip.

Although your world wonders me,
With your majestic and superior cackling hen
Your people I do not understand,
So to you I shall put an end
And you'll
Never hear
Surf music again
J. Hendrix.

Just wondering what this was directed at, since true "surf" music was not properly brought up here at all prior to your post. The Beach Boys? "Surf" music? :sign: Everyone knows only one of them even surfed...they just cashed in on the treand and posed early on.

Now...Dick Dale, The Lively Ones, The Chantays, The Challengers, The Tornadoes, and, to a degree, The Ventures, ...now THAT is all surf music, good, true and proper. Not The Beach Boys. Damn Doc, get yer genres right.

My dad was a DJ during the 50’s-60’s. I was one of maybe 5 kids in the universe who was encouraged to listen to Rock & Roll growing up and having the last name of “Beach “ you gotta know we listened to the Beach Boys. My brothers and I actually formed a band and we called ourselves The Beach Brothers (what else?). Too bad none of us could play any instruments, read music, or carry a tune.

Man, having a dad who was a DJ was wild. We had some real characters around the house all the time.

Here’s a good example. This is my sister with Rod Prince of “The Bubble Puppies”. They were a Texas based conservative old time Gospel band that ….no that was some one else. These guys brought hippie to Texas. They did one album and it was really very good but record label politics kept them from making it.

Edited to add -

As you might be able to see....their cd is readily available these days at, for instance, such places as Amazon.

Sorry about that MC, I should have said the album was released but the politics kept it from achieving the success it could have had.

You're a flippin' barrister and a master of sophistry. If the beach boys ain't surf music, I'm (shudder) a jarhead. :sign:

Thanks for sharing the great photo, preembargo. The first link MiamiCubano is also a treasure. Love the name Bubble Puppies- timeless!

MC, you'll want to look into the Pet Sounds Sessions 4 CD set. It even has the first true stereo mix

Not a big Beach Boys guy (was as a kid), but Pet Sounds is amazing. Brian Wilson's Smile is definately worth a listen as well.

Back to the Beatles though. Regardless of some inspiration, they are truely superior to the BBs.

Abbey Road- side two- is a masterpiece comparible to PF's Dark Side of the Moon in terms of longevity, fluidity and substance.

The White Album is completely underrated, imho. Great album with maybe two bad songs (both with a Yoko Ono influence). "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is several songs in one similar to side 2 of Abbey Road and Led Zeppelins' How Many More Times.

Let it Be- awesome.

Revolver and Rubber Soul are also fantastic transitional albums.

On the matter of the Beach Boys. I've never been a huge fan, however, Pet Sounds is AWESOME!!

I don't think so. RCA living stereo albums predate the above by about 10 yrs. They are the best stereo recordings ever made. Two mike, real time recordings. Nothing since has surpased them for sound stage and realism. It's like the band is on a pilar of air between your speakers. If you still have a turntable, it would be worth your while to hear what can actually be done on two channel reel to reel and a simple two mike set up. Mixing boards, recording one's parts individually and the like only managed to muddy things up.

Apples and oranges doc. The box set has the first true stereo mix of PET SOUNDS not the phased mono version that were released as stereo....on Capitol.

Here's a rare one for you. I know Doc has it because that is how he learned to speak hip :p
