Ammo Can Project

Had time for measuring. A Belinda ammocan (840 rd 5.56) exterior measurements seem about the same as your .50 cal can (if you measured exterior). About 5½ wide/side to side. About 11" long/front to back. About 7" deep/high. So maybe the box from a Belinda ammocan would drop right in your .50 cal can. IIRC, the Belinda ammocan held about 100 6.25x45 cigars standing upright on their feet. Again, not the best cedar, but a decent cedar plywood box.

Some good cedar boxes would fit in, with room left over. JR Ult No. 1 (holds 25 cigars 7.25x54) is about 7¾ wide, 4 and 5/8 long, 4¾ deep. JR Ult Presidente (holds 25 cigars 8.50x52) is 9 and 1/8 wide, 4 and 5/8 long, 4 and 5/8 deep.

Some combinations would get two good cedar boxes in there, with room left over. Could put a ERdM robusto suprema (holds 20 cigars 7.25x54) slide top box, and an Excalibur I (7.25x54) ten cigar box in. Or put in an Excalibur I twenty cigar box and an Excalibur I ten cigar box. Lots of good cedar, less room for cigars.

I've got some thin cedar sheets from cigar boxes that would fit. Would get cedar in the ammobox without taking a lot of room. Would not look as nice as the Belinda box or cigar boxes, but lots of room for cigars.

If you want any of this stuff, I'd be happy to mail it to you. Not looking for anything back my way.

So, it has been sitting for about 24 hours and the temp is holding around 72-74, the RH is up at 69%. Using the 65% beads that Tone-ny sent me, so i thing that the 3 or 4 smokes that I have in there are a little over hydrated, add a small amount of dry beads to the "puck" and will continue to watch. So far it really seems to be working out. I cant wait until I get my cigars in, several coming in from different sources, and see how it affects things. I also think that lining it will help, and should be able to get that done in a week or two, thanks to one of the newer members of CP. The lid is a little tuff to open, it might be all the extra paint on it, curious to see if it leads to damage to the sticks....time will tell

PS: Will post pics of the Humi as it fills up or I get the lining in....

Mighty fine work! the insignia looks great. I will be getting the cedar yomarrow night at our monthly herf and sending it out Wensday. So by the time it reaches you , you should be ready for it.

Tim, mailed a package this morning. Three kinds of Spanish cedar stuff in there, might all be useful. lol

My one accidental experiment with a Belinda ammocan humidor worked out okay. Put one sealed box of good cigars in an ammocan, and an opened box of good cigars in another ammocan humidor. Did not put any humidification devices in either can. Then forgot about/ignored the ammocan humis for a long time. One and a half years, or two years or longer? Finally decided to smoke a cigar from the opened box. Thought it might be dry and ruined. But the cigar smoked fine, tasted really good! Maybe whatever humidity there is in the cigars when the lid is closed stays there and they don't get too dry.

Anyone with ammocan humidor experience have a comment about whether you need something to add humidity in the can, or if the cigars have enough moisture?

well, if the cigars go into the can with say 70% humidity in them (from a regulated humidor), it should stay that RH, as the ammo cans are air/water tight. mine is at 75% RH and I need to ventilate it to go to 65%.

Well I found out that it is not water tight, so that means that it is not air tight, there is a bent corner on the lid, not too bad but water will leak out. I have not opened it today, but the smokes that went in to it were way moist. I had no way of regulating humidy for a while and was just kinda winging it, after the hydro got in and set up, I found out that it was up around 78%....so I am letting them come down slow in the ammo can. Temp is holding at 72 so I hope I do not get mold, but if i do, its no big loss, as the only thing that is in there are some free backwoods honey's and some knock off RyJ's.....

a few years back we at OpFTH had a guy here that was milling the cedar we bought to fit ammo cans and then we sent that over to the units. LEt me see if i can find him and if he still does it. At the very least I will throw in enough cedar from boxes or what ever i can to help you line a couple in your next opfth box

i ythink we held them in with double sided tape and it had an interior cover or top too to seal it.

I might have a pic to did up too. stand by :)

Might be a little something you can use in the package coming over. :whistling:

Ok, here is the next update for the Ammo Can Project. I would like to thank WGdog for the Belinda Insert. THis Project really cam together, but only with the help of everyone out there....
