Ammo Can Project

Well, Seeing that I am in Iraq, with way too much free time, I thought I would try and make a Ammo Can Humi.

Now I know I could just clean the can and use it, but I want to put some time and effort into this. I have 2 questions...

1. How do you know if a cigar box is made of cedar
2. Is there anyone out there that could help me design a stencil for a logo that I want to put on the Humi?

Most cabinet (cigar boxes that do not have a paper wrap on them) are spanish cedar, they are typically embossed or branded. and the smell alone is a good clue as to it being spanish cedar.
I used a .50 cal SAW can, I purchased some spanish cedar from an internet lumber co. i used 3/8" thick stock, and gorilla glue (which is the shiz of glues). I know Wyatt (Brickhouse) used double stick tape when he made an ammo can humi out there in the desert.

As far as a logo, why not use your units shoulder patch and your rank as a logo? or even the cigar pass logo, with Rod's permission of course. I also noticed you have a good logo in your sig tag...you in the 1st Calvary Div?

Tim,

The cigar boxes should have a nice strong Spanish cedar aroma, also the slight pinkish tint to the wood. I would wash out the ammo can really well and let it dry in the sun before starting, maby even a baking soda and water wash after it dries and another dryin g session to get the smalls completely out.

Personally, I would completely line the box and get a tube of 65% beads to keep it regulated. The cedar could be attached with a hot glue gun (no odor) or double sided tape.

My idea for the stencle would be an ongoing story of your tour, or career. I would OD green the entire outside, or desert kahki, then start with your initials and last name stenciled somewhere, your unit patch, maby MOS , definately the American flag, or silouhett of the USA, or Statue of liberty. I would have your close friends autograph the can with a fine sharpie , maby some stencils of your hardware,humvee,APC,HELOs whatever your job dishes out for you. The possibilities are endless.

It would be cool to look back at that can as it sits on the shelf in your house and tell your grand kids where that can has been and what you have covered the outside with.

I am guessing sharpies, paint pens and flat paints are easily aquired where you are.

Out of curiosity , how long does mail take to get your way if someone sends a small box? I have a bunch of cedar, but will be deploying myself very soon.

Most of the time mail canmake it here between 5-10 days, usually closer to 5. 10 days around holidays and such, and every now and then the roads get shut down.

The local vendors have some boxes but they dont sell the cigars fast enuff to empty them out quickly.

Well It seems that cigar boxes are going to be a bust, at least for the next month or so, so what i wanted to know is if it would be OK to put cigars in the ammo can without any kind of lining? Just on the metal...it has been well cleaned.

How big is your can. You know, I never thought I wouls be asking another man that,. Any how, let me know I have a friend that has numerous empty boxes that I can break down and send to you.

Over time, Spanish cedar will impart subtle flavor and aroma. Not having it will not damage your cigars. You've already taken care of the bigger concern - residue from the ammo that was previously stored in the can.

Well I am not sure I know you well enuff for this line of questioning, but I have been told that it is a "good size"

What ammo can is that (Hard to tell in your picture)? 5.56, 7.62 or .50 cal? Try to find a .50 cal can (or if you know anyone who uses a 20mm even better) because the 7.62 will be way too small and I wouldn't even bother with a 5.56 can.

I did some work on it to day, bright red paint, and gloss black for the "puck"

I carried an ammo can humidor back for one of our civilian contractors. They wouldn't let him carry it back, only bring it into the country. Go figure. Was a nice cedar lined one and it took a couple tries, but I finally got it back to him after we got back to the states. It had sentimental value to him as a retirement gift, so I was glad I could help out and get it back for him.

Several possibilities came to mind.

1) Send you the largest unfinished cedar cigar box that would fit your ammo box. Down in the basement I've got large size empty cedar boxes that might work, like JR Ult No. 1, JR Ult Presidente, JR Ult Cab 60, Excalibur I, ERdM robusto suprema.... Maybe two cedar boxes would fit, I'd need to measure. These are the best cedar boxes for aging cigars imho.

2) I could mail to you the plywood box with lid from inside one of JR Cigar's Belinda ammocan humidors. Not the best quality cedar, but might work well. The Belinda ammocan humidors I have are 840 rd .556 and 1000 rd 9mm.

3) Mail a complete Belinda ammocan humidor, can and wood liner box, to you. Not sure if the authorities would let that go through.

4) Send large thin cedar pieces from cigar boxes. Would not make a neat box in the can because of thin pieces and different sizes, but could cover the bottom and sides and top with thin cedar sheets.

LMK if anything sounds interesting. I'd be happy to send cedar to you. Sent packages to troops in Afghanistan, so I know about using priority mail and customs declaration.

Ok, here are the pics of the progress so far, as I type this it is on the drying table. I did not test to see if the paint would bleed through the tape that I used...lets hope not. If so, I will just reverse mask it with a different tape and try again, I have a never ending supply of time and paint

OK, Its all done for now. Just need to get the cedar to line it. But, until then, here she is......
